Mt Kenya climb for Shap

Thank you so much for coming to find out more information on our overseas expedition to Kenya to climb Mt Kenya, Africa’s second highest mountain.

This expedition to climb Mt Kenya Africa’s second highest mountain will hopefully be the climax of a ‘fundraising year’ in support of SHAP’s work with vulnerable young parents. Elizabeth Anderson House is a supported housing scheme for teenage parents in Liverpool and is the city’s only resource to offer 24 hour support to young mothers and their children. The project is owned by LHT, managed by SHAP since 2007 and funded by Liverpool City Council.

Mt Kenya has 3 main peaks – Batian, Nelion and Lenana. The first 2 peaks are technical climbs whilst Lenana is a non-technical hiking option. This itinerary takes you to the summit of Lenana and in doing so allows you to see the best of Mt Kenya.                                                                                                             Mt Kenya

Itinerary:

Upon arrival into Nairobi airport we will  be met by our local Kenyan team and transferred to our hotel in Nairobi, where we will have time to relax before a full pre expedition briefing with our climbs manager and  guide. The following morning we drive to Mt Kenya National Park where we begin our trek from Sirimon park gate (2700m), our afternoon acclimatization hike will see us walking in the tropical forest, occasionally enjoying the sighting of a monkey, a buffalo or even an elephant if were lucky before arriving at our first nights camp Old Mosses (3200mt).

The next morning after a good breakfast we begin trekking through moorland vegetation with picturesque views of the Sirimon and the Mackinders valleys arriving at Likki North Hut (3950mt), we then spend the afternoon relaxing and taking a short walk helping us to acclimatise to the altitude. Our third day of trekking covers 9km from Liki North Camp to Shiptons camp traversing through valleys and steep gorges, rare Afro -Alpine moorland and plant life which plays host to a bizarre collection of pre-historic looking plants before finally arriving at Shiptons Camp (4200mt) for an early nights sleep.

The following morning we make our way through the spectacular Bamboo Forest to our 4×4 vehicles, we say farewell and a big thank you to our porters before our transfer to Nairobi. On arrival in Nairobi we have some time to relax before going to dinner in a local restaurant for a night of celebrations.

Time permitting we will visit the Giraffe Centre and Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi before flying back to the U.K.
