Carnival UK – Lake District Triple Challenge

Employees from Carnival UK will tackle the spectacular landscape of the Lake District National Park in support of the charity, Oasis Down to Earth Farm. In teams Carnival UK will take on this epic one day multi-activity challenge of biking, hiking and kayaking! Conquering the summit of one of the Lake District’s most iconic peaks, the Old Man of Coniston, pedalling stunning mountain bike trails in Grizedale forest and kayaking across the picturesque Coniston Water.
The hire of all bikes, kayaks and safety equipment is included in the challenge. Your journey will include approximately 12km of cycling, 10km trekking and 1.5km kayaking. The sense of achievement is huge as you conquer this epic one day challenge of steep climbs, grueling hills and paddling along one of the largest natural lakes in the UK.

Arrival and preparation
Coach transfer to your hotel in the Lake District National Park. That evening you will receive a full event briefing from your locally based Mountain Leader to ensure you are well prepared for the following day’s challenge. You are welcome to ask any questions about the event during this session. Hotel accommodation is included on a twin share basis, though dinner is at your own expense.
First leg: Biking – approx 12 miles
The adventure begins on the picturesque shores of Coniston Lake. You will return to this base between each section of the challenge. After a short safety briefing you will be kitted out with your bike to tackle the first leg of your Lakes Triple Challenge. With the Old Man of Coniston’s rugged peak looming behind you in the distance, you will cycle along the shore of of Coniston Lake into Grizedale Forest. Your route then tackles a step climb where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the Lake District. This is followed by a sweeping descent towards the scenic route skirting the shores of Coniston Lake.

Second leg: Hiking the Old Man of Coniston – approx 5 miles
Arriving back in the village on Coniston you’ll swap your bikes for boots and begin the ascent of The Old Man of Coniston. Your climb will start on the quiet country lane which climbs steeply for the 500 metres or so. After some more steady climbing you come to Low Water Lake and great place to stop and take in your surroundings. The path continues up the hillside, zigzagging as it climbs towards the summit. From the summit your view will take in the surrounding lakes and peaks and, weather permitting, some of the most extensive views in the Lake District. Following your obligatory photo snap at the summit, your descent takes you down the same path to half way point where you then turn left passing ruined buildings and the industrial detritus of old quarry workings before arriving back on the lake shore.

Third and final leg: Kayaking – approx 2 miles (weather dependent)
After conquering the Old Man of Coniston, you will trek to the shores of Coniston Water for the final leg of your challenge – a 2 mile kayak .You will be kitted out for the water element of your challenge and following a thorough kayak briefing you will paddle along the lake in double sit-on-top kayaks. This is the perfect well-earned rest for those legs after your bike and mountain climb.
Coniston Water is a magnificent glacially formed lake nestled amidst some of the Lake District most spectacular scenery. Weather permitting, you may catch a glimpse of the summit of the Old Man of Coniston and Grizedale Forest which gives an incredible sense of achievement. On returning to the shores you can celebrate with some fizz on the completion of this epic Lakes challenge with your fellow team mates.

On completion of the challenge you will be transferred back to your hotel for some team celebrations of the day’s epic achievements. Hotel accommodation is included on a twin share basis, though dinner is at your own expense.
Breakfast and return home
Following breakfast at the hotel, there will be a coach transfer back to Southampton for you to then make your own journey home full of an immense sense of pride.
Once you have registered for this challenge, all the event information will be supplied to you via our mobile travel app, Vamoos. This is a free app which you can download onto your mobile phone allowing you access to the event info 24/7.
Hire bikes and helmets will be provided. Bikes will be sized according to your height. All bikes will be transferred from the cycling/trekking transition point back to the hotel for secure storage.
You will have time to change from your cycling gear to trekking kit and leave kit at the check point. It is essential that you have a waterproof jacket and trousers, hiking boots, warm clothing and be prepared for all weather conditions on the mountain.
All kayaking equipment will be provided including a buoyancy aid. Shoes must be worn during this challenge so it’s ideal to change back into your trainers as they will get wet.
The terrain on this challenge varies throughout and can be rough at times, so preparation is ideal!
• Cycling leg – undulating course with one steep climb on road and forest trail
• Trekking leg – summiting the Old man of Coniston involves some steep ascents & descents and rocky terrain
• Kayaking leg – you will start your kayaking leg in a sheltered bay before heading out onto the lake in order to practice your paddling skills. Sweeping close to the lake shore, you will paddle the length of the lake and back which can prove challenging due to the water flow.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY
MEDIUM TO TOUGH
The Lakes Triple Challenge is graded as medium to tough, dependent on weather conditions. This is the ideal event for participants who are of an adventurous spirit and an open mind, but potentially haven’t taken on a multi-activity challenge before. Participants do not need to be an expert cyclist or kayaker, just someone with a willing sense of adventure to explore the epic Lake District landscape.
WEATHER AND SAFETY
The weather in the UK can change very quickly, what can start out as a good day can soon become very poor. It is very important to be well equipped and prepared for all weather conditions. The Leaders reserves the right to change the itinerary at any time should the conditions require it. In these circumstances we will make the best alternative arrangements possible that maintain the integrity of the original itinerary.
There will be a maximum of 50 participants. You will be split into teams of 10 – 12 people and accompanied by a certified Adventurous Ewe Leader for each activity.
HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?
Upon signing up you will be provided with a Training Guide for this challenge. We recommend doing regular exercise every week and the Training Guide will help you. You will enjoy this challenge far more if you are physically fit and prepared. Make the most of the experience, enjoy being in the great outdoors and know that you are helping Oasis Down to Earth Farm!

You will be taking part in teams and accompanied by an Adventurous Ewe Leader for each activity. There will be the opportunity to change and refuel at the completion of each leg at the Event Base. Here there is access to changing and toilet facilities and you can leave any items of kit at the Event Base as well.
Two nights accommodation is included in The Windermere Hotel on a twin room basis.

Breakfast will be served at your hotel.
Snacks and drinks will be provided at the Event Base which is where you will return to following the completion of each activity.
Lunch will be a hot meal served at the Event Base.
