Day 2

THE CHALLENGE

Following breakfast you will pick up your packed lunch and join your team for either the 13 mile or 25 mile trek. Both teams will start together and be accompanied by your Mountain Leader for the entire route. The two routes split after the first 6 miles.

13 mile route (approx 5 hours)

Following the path north, you leave Hathersage with a steady climb from 160m to 460m onto the impressive Stanage Edge. Here you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Dark Peak moorlands and the Hope Valley. You follow the contours of the gritstone edge which stretches for approximately 4 miles. This area was recently featured in the classic film ‘Pride & Prejudice’ starring Keira Knightley.

Soon you will split from the other route and reach your halfway point to enjoy your packed lunch and a break. Fueled by your lunch, you then have a short climb to reach the second highest point of your trek of Bamford Moore at 420m. Again you will be rewarded with more jaw-dropping views as you look down the valley to the Derwent River. You will follow a steady descent through more of the impressive Peak District landscape before arriving back at the YHA in Hathersage.

This trek should take approximately 5 hours depending on the weather, number of photo & snack stops and the ability of the group.

25 mile route (approx 7 hours)

Following the path north, you leave Hathersage with a steady climb from 160m to 460m onto the impressive Stanage Edge. Here you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Dark Peak moorlands and the Hope Valley. You follow the contours of the gritstone edge which stretches for approximately 4 miles. This area was recently featured in the classic film ‘Pride & Prejudice’ starring Keira Knightley.

Soon you will split from the other route and continue with a descent into the picturesque Derwent Valley. Your path leads across the Derwent River which is steeped in history flowing for 66 miles and was once highly important to the Industrial Revolution. Having reached the halfway point you have the chance to enjoy your packed lunch surrounded by some stunning views of the river. Fueled by your lunch you then have a steady climb of 200m to Win Hill. The views from the summit are spectacular with Lose Hill and the Castleton Ridge, Edale, the moors of Kinder Scout, Ladybower Reservoir and the wild moors and edges of the eastern Peak District all included in a superb panorama. Your path then descends back down towards the Derwent River through forests, taking you back to the YHA at Hathersage.

This trek should take approximately 7 hours depending on the weather, number of photo & snack stops and the ability of the group.
