Take the less trodden three peaks trail and discover the three highest peaks in North, Mid and South Wales. This incredible challenge will see ewe tackle the highest mountain in Wales, the iconic Snowdon, and then go on to climb the stunning Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan. Ewe will finish having ascended at total of 2,334 metres (7,657feet) in less than 24 hours. Not bad for just one weekend!

  • Snowdon, North Wales at 1085 metres/3560 feet
  • Cadair Idris, Mid Wales at 893 metres/2930 feet
  • Pen-y-Fan, South Wales at 866 metres/2907 feet

There’s plenty of mythical legends surrounding these mountains and your professional guides will keep ewe entertained (or pre-occupied) with stories of giants, madman and poets or explain some of the spectacular geology before you’re greeted with 360 views from each mountain summit, weather permitting of course.  The Welsh Three Peaks includes a total walking distance of 17 miles (27.4km) and an ascent of 2,334 metres (7,657feet), and ewe will be transferred via mini bus driving approximately 135 miles inbetween.

Ewe can do it!

Day 1

Snowdon (1,085m) – 14km
Our challenge begins on the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon or Yr Wyddfa in Welsh, standing at 1085m.  Snowdonia is unique for its bio-diversity of plants and wildlife and with breath taking views from the summit is a perfect way to start your Welsh 3 peaks challenge. Our ascent route will be on the Pyg track which rewards us with those classic Snowdon views.

The ascent should take approximately 2hrs. Once on the summit we will have time for a photo and enjoy the views before starting our decent down either the Llanberis Path or Miners Track.  The descent should take approximately 2hrs. Approx 4-5hrs walking

Cadair Idris (893M)
Cadir Idris (the chair of Idris) is in reference to a giant of Welsh mythology who was said to have used Llyn Cau as an enormous armchair. Legend has it that anyone who sleeps on the Summit will awaken a madman or poet.

Our route to the summit of Cadair Idris will be via the  Minffordd Path the route starts on the southern side of the mountain, using this ascent route past Llyn Cau and along the rim of Craig Cau to the summit Penygadair (Top of the Chair).Once on the summit you are rewarded with stunning views over Snowdonia and the hills of Shropshire. Time permitting, we will complete the horseshoe route a total of 8 miles. Approx 4-5hrs walking

Pen y Fan (886M)
Our final summit on the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge, Pen Y Fan is the highest mountain in South Wales and the Brecon Beacons. Being lowest mountain on the challenge Pen Y Fan still deserves respect as it can be a very challenging mountain in poor conditions. On a good day there are great views over the Brecon Beacons.

The ascent of our final summit starts from the Story arms and slowly climbs to Corn Du with a short 50mt scramble to the summit. Once on the summit of our final summit we have time to take a group photo and celebrate our achievement, before making our down to our waiting vehicle. Approx 2-3hrs walking

Challenge finish point: YHA Brecon Beacons, Brecon, Powys, LD3 8NH

Essential Information

Weather & Safety
The weather in the mountains can change very quickly, what can start out as a good day can soon become very poor. It is very important to be well equipped and prepared for all conditions. We will be crossing terrain varying from moorland to lose rocky ground. Our route will be ascending and descending a great deal and therefore a good level of fitness is required.

The Leader reserves the right to change the itinerary at any time should the conditions require it.In these circumstances we will make the best alternative arrangements possible that maintain the integrity of the original itinerary. All our guides are first aid trained and carry fully equipped medical kits for serious medical emergencies.

Accommodation
We recommend you book accommodation at the Pen Y Pass YHA or a hotel in Llanberis, both of which are at the base of Snowdon.

Trekking Experience
To complete the 3 Peaks Challenge, it is preferable that you have done some training walks.
The walking is not technically difficult, but you must be a confident walker with a good level of fitness. This is the perfect challenge if you have an adventurous spirit and an open mind.

What are the group sizes?
Our maximum size group is 12 per Mountain Leader and minimum we run with is 6

Who will be leading the group?
We employ experienced and fully qualified Mountain Leaders to accompany and lead you. They are Mountain First Aid trained and have extensive experience in leading in the mountains and the three peaks challenge.  They will be ultimately responsible for your safety on the mountain and the rest of the group. They will be carrying full safety equipment and mountain first aid kits with them.

How fit do I need to be?
Training and a good level of mountain walking fitness is definitely required. This is a tough challenge and physically and mentally draining, sleep deprivation plays a part here, affecting some people more than others, particularly with awkward sleeping conditions.  As much preparation and training you put in beforehand the better chance of success you have.

What do you do to protect the environment?
We limit the impact we have on the surrounding environment by remaining on the paths at all times so as not to cause further erosion on the mountain. We will ensure that all rubbish is disposed of responsibly and take all rubbish away with us.
