Iceland Laugavegur Trek (6 Days)

The Iceland Laugavegur Trek is a wonderful and wild trek amongst the unique landscapes of Iceland. From the modern city of Reykjavik to the volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls and steaming lava fields of the interior, Iceland is a country of great contrast. Our trekking route will take us through one of the most actively volcanic areas in Iceland.

The Iceland Laugavegur Trek is the premier trek in Iceland and one of the most spectacular wilderness treks in Europe, the days are long with some steep climbs and descents on rough ground, you will be expected to help set up camp in the evenings. Our discreet vehicle support enables us to provide well-equipped camps and also means that we are trekking lightweight and fully enjoy this superb wilderness adventure in Iceland to the full.

Day 1: Landmannahellir
Flight to Keflavík, the airport that serves Reykjavik. Transfer to camp in Landmannahellir, dinner followed by briefing. Overnight camp.

Day 2: Landmannahellir – Landmannalaugar
We trek from Landmannahellir (590m) to Landmannalaugar (575m) passing lakes and the magnificent Domadalslava lava fields. Overnight camp.

Day 3: Landmannalaugar – Álftavatn
This is the longest and toughest day. From Landmannalaugar (575m) we trek across the ancient lava field of Laugahraun, formed in 1477. It’s an area of much geothermal activity with steaming vents and gurgling hot springs.

Day 4: Álftavatn – Emstrur
Leaving camp we wade through an icy stream which will ensure everyone is wide awake and raring to go. After a few short climbs and descents we reach a black volcanic plain devoid of vegetation, we continue trekking towards the deep canyon of the Markarfljot river. The terrain today is predominantly flat. Overnight camp.

Day 5: Emstrur – Thorsmörk
We set off along the Markarfljot canyon which is well over 100m deep, heading in and out of small valleys. As we draw nearer to Thorsmörk were rewarded with views of Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindafjallajökull glaciers.  Arrive Thorsmörk, transfer to Reykjavik (2 ½ hours.
