Overview

Hike peaks, paddle fjords, plunge into Arctic waters and share meals by the fire. Phones off. Life on.

This is Itisoq. A quiet bay tucked deep within the Nuuk fjord system, reached only by boat. Within 45 minutes, the last traces of civilisation fall away, replaced by towering peaks rising over 1,100 metres, vast open water and a sense of space that’s hard to put into words.

For 6 days, this remote Arctic camp becomes home. Each day unfolds outdoors. You move across ridgelines and through open tundra, paddle along the fjord, fish in clear waters and take time to pause and soak in the vast landscapes. There is no fixed pace. Just the rhythm of the place and the freedom to experience it.

Camp life is intentionally simple. Comfortable tents, shared cooking and time around the fire, with a sauna tent to warm up at the end of the day, or for those feeling brave, a refreshing polar plunge. You drink from glacier fed streams, breathe crisp Arctic air and begin to feel present in a way that is often lost at home.

This is not somewhere you pass through. It is somewhere you settle into.

Led by experienced local guides, you explore with people who know this landscape deeply. Their connection to the terrain and culture shapes the journey, opening up places and moments that would otherwise remain unseen.

Expect active days, tired legs and a genuine sense of connection to the environment around you. A few days here is enough to shift perspective and remind you how good simple can feel.

Day 1
Tikilluarit — welcome to Greenland

Meet at 9.30am at the Tide stairs, Tidevandstrappen, at Nuuk harbour. From here, board your boat and journey deep into the fjord system, leaving the town behind as you head towards Itisoq. Within less than an hour, the landscape opens up into vast Arctic wilderness, where towering peaks rise straight from the water and the sense of remoteness is immediate.

Arriving at camp, settle into your expedition tents and take time to get your bearings. A full briefing with your local guides sets the tone for the days ahead, covering life at camp, safety and the rhythm of the adventure. Once introductions are made, it is time to step straight into the landscape.

Your first hike leads you across open tundra and gentle ridgelines, offering wide views across the fjord system and a first taste of the terrain you will explore over the coming days. Along the way, there is the option for a refreshing dip in a natural river pool or the fjord itself, a bracing but memorable welcome to Greenland.

Returning to camp, the evening unfolds simply. Dinner is prepared and shared together, followed by time around the fire as the light lingers over the mountains. This is your first moment to pause, take it all in and settle into life in this remote corner of the Arctic.

Distance: Approx. 6 to 8 kilometres
Time: 3 to 4 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Included
Transfer: Boat transfer from Nuuk harbour
Accommodation: Expedition camp, twin share tents
Meals: Dinner only

Day 2
Deeper into the wild — journey to the Itisoq Glacier

Wake to a quiet Arctic morning at camp, with coffee brewing and the fjord stretching out before you. After breakfast, pack up and begin the journey inland, heading towards the towering Itisoq Glacier.

The route climbs steadily through a rugged canyon before opening into a vast natural amphitheatre, surrounded by high peaks and raw, untouched terrain. This is where you set up camp, right at the foot of the glacier, in a place that feels both remote and immense.

Once settled, there is time to rest or, for those with energy to spare, continue upwards towards the summit at around 1,100 metres. The climb rewards you with sweeping views across the fjord system and the ice below, offering a powerful sense of scale and perspective.

As evening approaches, the focus shifts back to camp. With the glacier close by and the mountains rising around you, this is a place to pause and take it all in. Weather depending, you may sleep in tents or beneath open Arctic skies, adding to the sense of adventure.

Dinner is shared together in true expedition style before settling into your sleeping bags, with the sounds of the glacier and the stillness of the landscape all around you.

Distance: 6 to 8 kilometres
Elevation gain: 750 metres to camp or 1,100 metres with summit option
Time: 3 to 5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Included
Accommodation: Expedition camp, twin share tents
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3
Slow it down — return to camp and reset

After the effort of the previous day, the morning begins at a gentler pace. Wake beside the glacier, enjoy a well earned breakfast and a hot coffee, and take a moment to absorb the scale and stillness of your surroundings before beginning the descent.

The route back to basecamp retraces your steps through the wide mountain bowl and down through the canyon, with the landscape revealing new perspectives on the way down. By the time you arrive back at camp, the mood shifts from expedition to recovery.

The sauna tent is fired up, offering warmth and a chance to fully relax after the hike. For those keen to stay active, stand up paddleboards are ready on the fjord, giving you the chance to get out on the water and build confidence for the days ahead.

Alternatively, take things at your own pace. Try fishing from the shoreline, with a strong chance of catching something fresh for dinner. You will be part of the process, helping prepare whatever is caught alongside the group.

As evening settles, gather once again for a shared meal, shaped by the day’s efforts and the simple rhythm of camp life.

Distance: Approx. 6 kilometres
Time: 4 to 5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Included
Accommodation: Expedition camp, twin share tents
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4
Ridge lines and fjords — paddle and hike into the mountains

Today combines two perspectives of Greenland, from the water and from the heights above it. After breakfast, begin by paddling across the bay on stand up paddleboards, travelling steadily through the fjord with mountains rising on all sides.

Reaching the far shore, set out on foot towards the ridge. The route climbs through rugged terrain, gradually opening up wide views across the fjord system. From the top, the landscape stretches in every direction, with peaks, water and distant ice shaping the horizon.

There is time to pause, take in the views and enjoy a well earned lunch before beginning the descent back towards the shoreline. The return journey offers a different angle on the same vast surroundings, with the light and perspective constantly shifting.

Back at camp, the evening is yours to relax, share stories and settle once again into the rhythm of life in this remote Arctic setting.

Distance: Approx. 6 to 8 kilometres
Time: 4 to 6 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Included
Accommodation: Expedition camp, twin share tents
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Equipment: Stand up paddleboards and safety equipment

Day 5
One last push — paddle Itisoq Bay and summit the Shark Fin

After breakfast, set out for your final full day of exploration. Take to the water once more, paddling across Itisoq Bay for around thirty minutes, or choose to hike along the shoreline if preferred. Either way, the journey brings you to the base of a distinctive peak known as the Shark Fin.

From here, the route climbs steadily towards the summit. As you gain height, the views open out across the eastern reaches of the fjord system, with mountains and water stretching far into the distance. It is a fitting backdrop for your final ascent.

The summit offers a rewarding sense of scale and perspective, marking a high point of the journey. Take time to pause, enjoy the moment and reflect on the days behind you before making your way back down.

Return to camp for your final evening together, sharing a meal and stories from the week in this remote Arctic setting.

Distance: Approx. 6 kilometres
Elevation gain: 400 metres
Time: 4 to 5 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

Included
Accommodation: Expedition camp, twin share tents
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Equipment: Stand up paddleboards and safety equipment

Day 6
Final hike and return to Nuuk

On your final day, leave camp behind and travel by boat towards the Kangerluarsunnguaq area, also known as Kang Ski. This last journey offers one more chance to take in the scale of the fjord system as you move through these remote waters.

Arriving ashore, set out on a final hike through mountainous terrain shaped by rolling hills, rugged peaks and a nearby glacier. The route is moderate, giving you time to move steadily and absorb the surroundings. It is a place of quiet and space, where the landscape invites reflection on the days just passed.

Take a moment to pause, breathe it in and enjoy the stillness before beginning your return journey.

Later, board the boat back to Nuuk harbour, where your adventure comes to a close, leaving you with a deep connection to this remarkable part of the Arctic.

Distance: Approx. 4 to 6 kilometres
Time: 2 to 3 hours
Difficulty: Easy to moderate

Included
Transfer: Boat transfer to Nuuk harbour
Accommodation: Not included, can be arranged in Nuuk at additional cost
Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Note: The itinerary is flexible and may be adjusted based on weather conditions and group ability to ensure safety throughout.

Why go

Exploring Greenland’s remote fjord systems is far more than a physical adventure. It is a chance to step into one of the last truly wild places on Earth and experience it in a way that respects both the landscape and the people connected to it.

Travelling by boat, foot and paddle, you move through a vast Arctic environment that few people ever reach. There are no roads, no crowds and no set paths to follow. Instead, you experience the land as it is, shaped by ice, water and time, with space to slow down and take it in.

Your journey is led by experienced local guides whose deep knowledge of the terrain and environment brings the landscape to life. Their connection to Greenland’s culture and way of living helps you understand not just where you are, but how people have adapted to and thrived in this remote part of the world.

By travelling in a small group and operating from a low impact expedition camp, your footprint is kept minimal. Every participant is equipped with a Water to Go bottle or filter to reduce single use plastic, and all activity is guided by a leave no trace approach, ensuring this fragile Arctic environment is protected for the future.

A portion of your booking also supports Cool Earth, helping to protect vital ecosystems and communities globally, reinforcing the belief that travel can be a force for good.

This is adventure with purpose. A journey into true wilderness that challenges, resets and connects you to nature in its purest form.

Flights

Flights are not included in your Greenland Hike, SUP and Wilderness Camping Adventure, giving you the flexibility to travel from your nearest airport, use frequent flyer points or extend your time in Greenland before or after your trip.

Nuuk is now served by a new international airport, making access to Greenland easier than ever, with connections via Iceland and Denmark.

Please note that airport transfers are not included. Taxis are available at Nuuk Airport, with a typical journey time of around 10 to 15 minutes into town and the harbour.

If you would prefer support with your travel arrangements, our ATOL protected Flight Agent can assist in booking flights and advising on the best options for your itinerary.

Passport

To enter Greenland, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, however it is not part of the Schengen Area in the same way as mainland Europe, so entry requirements can differ.

Before travelling, please ensure:

  • Your passport is undamaged and valid for the duration of your stay in Greenland
  • You have at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps
  • You hold a return or onward ticket
  • You can show proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • You can provide documentation confirming the purpose of your visit, such as your trip booking

Important: Passport Details Required

We must receive your full passport details at least 3 weeks before departure, or immediately for late bookings. This is essential for:

  • Providing advance information to local operators and accommodation
  • Ensuring smooth logistics and travel arrangements throughout your trip

If accurate details are not received in time, delays or additional local costs may be incurred.

Before travelling, please refer to your government’s official travel advice for the most up to date entry requirements:

UK travellers: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/denmark/entry-requirements
General guidance: https://visitgreenland.com/plan-your-trip/entry-requirements/

Visa

Visas are not currently required to enter Greenland for travellers from the UK, US and EU for short stays. However, entry requirements can change, and it is your responsibility to check and obtain any necessary documentation before travelling.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and while closely linked to Europe, it operates its own entry rules. If you are travelling via Iceland or Denmark, you must also meet the entry requirements for those transit countries.

We strongly recommend checking with the nearest embassy or consulate before departure, particularly if you are travelling through multiple countries.

Some governments provide up to date guidance for their citizens. Useful links are below:

Please ensure you review the latest advice before travelling, as requirements can change at short notice.

Travel Insurance & Global Rescue Membership

Travel insurance is a vital part of your Greenland Expedition and it is compulsory for all participants. Your policy must provide comprehensive cover for:

  • The full value of your trip

  • Medical expenses (including emergency evacuation and repatriation)

  • All activities undertaken on this trip

  • Personal liability

  • Trip cancellation and curtailment

  • Loss of luggage, valuables and personal belongings

  • Travel and flight delays

  • Pandemic-related travel disruptions

Greenland’s landscapes are remote and rugged, and access to medical facilities can be limited outside towns, so having the right cover in place is essential for your safety and peace of mind.

For UK residents, we partner with Campbell Irvine Direct, a specialist travel insurance broker offering policies that meet the requirements of our adventure travel itineraries. If you’d like a quote, you can do so here.

Important

We strongly recommend arranging suitable travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. This ensures you’re protected immediately should you need to cancel for an insured reason before departure.

GLOBAL RESCUE MEMBERSHIP

For peace of mind whilst remote trekking, Global Rescue provides short term membership giving access to travel, security, medical advisory and evacuation services up to $US500,000.  They’re a specialised field rescue company, and assist from the point of illness or injury by getting you to the closest and most appropriate medical facilities to get stabilised. Once fit to fly if you require additional inpatient treatment Global Rescue will further evacuate and repatriate to your home hospital on record. These services are all covered through their upfront membership fee with no claims process.  For more info, please click here

Vaccinations & Allergies

VACCINATIONS

Before travelling to Greenland, it is recommended that you consult your GP or a specialist travel clinic to confirm any vaccinations or health precautions you may need.

You should be up to date with routine vaccinations, including:

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio
Measles, Mumps and Rubella

Greenland is a remote Arctic destination, and access to medical facilities is limited outside Nuuk. Travelling prepared is essential. Ensure you carry any personal medication and have comprehensive travel insurance that covers remote locations and emergency evacuation.

For the latest medical guidance, please refer to NaTHNaC via TravelHealthPro:

https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/country/92/greenland#Vaccine_Recommendations

Severe Allergies

If you have a severe allergy, please inform us at the time of booking so we can make any necessary preparations. While every effort is made to accommodate dietary and medical needs, an allergy free environment cannot be guaranteed in a remote expedition setting.

You must bring your own medication, including any adrenaline auto injectors such as EpiPen, as these are not routinely carried by the local team. Please ensure your Trip Leader is aware of your allergy and knows where your medication is stored.

Your safety is always a priority. If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch.

Local Guides

Your local Greenlandic guides are at the heart of this adventure. Experienced, highly skilled and deeply connected to the landscape, they bring the Arctic wilderness to life through their knowledge of the terrain, wildlife and way of living in this remote environment. Trained in wilderness safety and first aid, they guide you confidently across fjords, mountains and camp life in one of the most untouched regions on Earth.

As you travel, you gain a genuine insight into life in Greenland. From time spent on the water to stories shared around the fire, this is an experience shaped by people who know these landscapes intimately and respect them deeply.

Travelling with local guides ensures your journey directly supports the people and communities connected to this region, helping sustain livelihoods and encourage responsible tourism in Greenland.

Group size

Small groups are at the heart of this adventure. They create a more personal experience, reduce environmental impact in a fragile Arctic setting and allow for a stronger connection with both the landscape and the people guiding you through it.

The Greenland Hike, SUP and Wild Camping Adventure operates with a minimum group size of 4 and a maximum of 12. This keeps the group close knit, ensures excellent guide to participant ratios and allows you the space and flexibility to fully experience life in this remote wilderness.

You are very welcome to join as a solo traveller, with friends or family, or as part of a shared adventure with like minded people.

If you have a group of 6 or more, a private departure can be arranged and tailored to suit your dates, pace and objectives. Whether you are travelling as a group of friends, a team or for a specific purpose, the journey can be shaped around you.

To chat about creating a bespoke Greenland adventure, get in touch at info@adventurousewe.co.uk or call 07747 346 588.

Trip grading

This expedition is graded as Tough. You will be trekking and camping in a remote Arctic environment, often away from established paths, but it is very achievable with the right preparation and mindset.

You will need a good level of fitness, along with strength, endurance and a positive, team focused approach. Days can be physically demanding, and you will be expected to carry your own kit, along with a share of some group equipment.

The terrain is varied and uneven, with no fixed trails. You will move across tundra, rocky ground and mountainous landscapes, sometimes navigating by natural features rather than defined routes.

Weather conditions in Greenland can change quickly. You should be prepared for a wide range of conditions, including wind, rain and cooler temperatures, even in summer. Having the right clothing and footwear is essential.

Facilities are very basic throughout. There are no formal washing facilities and toilet arrangements are simple and in keeping with the remote setting. While this can feel like a step away from everyday comforts, it often becomes part of the shared experience and brings the group closer together.

As with all remote expeditions, safety is always the priority. Your guides will make decisions based on conditions and group wellbeing, and the itinerary may be adjusted to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Weather

Greenland has an Arctic climate, with temperatures remaining cool even in summer. In coastal areas such as the Nuuk fjord system, conditions during the northern summer can feel relatively mild, but they are highly changeable.

You may experience calm, sunny days with clear views across the fjords, followed by sudden shifts to wind, rain and colder conditions. Temperatures typically range between around 0°C and 10°C, though wind chill can make it feel significantly colder.

Even in summer, it is possible to encounter near freezing temperatures, especially in the evenings, at higher elevations or when exposed to wind. Weather can change quickly throughout the day, so being prepared for a range of conditions is essential.

Layered clothing, waterproofs and warm kit are key to staying comfortable in this dynamic Arctic environment.

Training

This expedition is graded Tough, and good preparation will make a real difference to how much you enjoy it. With consecutive days of hiking, carrying kit, paddling on the fjord and living outdoors, you will need solid fitness, resilience and a willingness to embrace the environment.

You do not need to be an elite athlete, but you should feel comfortable hiking for several hours at a time on uneven ground, carrying a pack and being active across multiple days in a remote setting.

What to focus on:

Endurance hiking
Regular hikes of 4 to 6 hours on hilly or uneven terrain are the best preparation. Back to back days help replicate the rhythm of this trip.

Leg and core strength
Build strength through step ups, lunges, squats and uphill walking. This supports stability across rocky ground and uneven terrain.

Cardiovascular fitness
Include activities such as running, cycling, swimming or fast paced hiking to build stamina for long, active days.

Carrying weight
Train with a 20 to 30 litre backpack weighing around 6 to 10 kilograms.

Terrain confidence
Practice on mixed terrain such as rocky paths, uneven trails and open ground without clear paths. This closely reflects conditions in Greenland.

Cold and weather exposure
Training in varied weather helps build resilience. You should be comfortable moving in wind, rain and cooler temperatures.

Mental resilience
Life at camp is simple and remote. A positive mindset, adaptability and team spirit will shape your experience as much as your physical preparation.

Training support from us:

To help you prepare, you will receive a comprehensive Training Guide once you book. This includes practical advice, exercises and guidance tailored to a multi day Arctic expedition.

The more prepared you are, the more you will enjoy the journey and everything it brings along the way.

Our motto
Train hard, smile harder, and enjoy the journey.

Kit

Having the right kit is essential for a safe, comfortable and enjoyable Greenland Hike, SUP and Camp Adventure. You will be active in a remote Arctic environment where conditions can change quickly, so being well prepared will make a big difference to your comfort.
