Overview
In Sri Lanka’s Hill Country, away from the beaches and headline sights, the pace shifts. The air smells faintly of tea. Hills roll out in every direction. And a network of quiet trails opens up a side of the island that most travellers never reach.
This trip follows some of the best stages of the Pekoe Trail, a 300km route that threads through tea plantations, forest tracks, ridgelines and remote villages. Over five days of trekking, you move through changing landscapes, starting high on Horton Plains before descending the Devil’s Staircase and into the heart of tea country
It’s not just about the walking. The trail brings you close to the people who live and work here, from tea estate communities to small villages tucked into the hills. You see how the landscape is shaped, not just by nature, but by generations of hands at work.
The trekking is varied and rewarding. Some days are longer and more demanding, others shorter and more scenic, giving you time to take in the views, the detail, and the rhythm of life around you. Expect wide open ridgelines, railway crossings, forest sections and long stretches where it feels like you have the trail to yourself.
The journey finishes in Ella, before heading south to the coast and the old trading town of Galle. With an experienced local guide leading the way, this is a different side of Sri Lanka. One you don’t just see, but properly experience.
Ayu-bowan — welcome to Sri Lanka – and a new hiking trail that connects trekkers with locals, and showcases the story of Ceylon tea to the world.
Arrive into Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. If your arrival time aligns with the nominated group transfer, you will be met and travel to the coastal town of Negombo, just a short drive away. It is an easy introduction to Sri Lanka, giving you time to settle in after your journey and begin to take in the change of pace.
If your flight does not align with the group transfer, you can make your own way to the hotel, with full details provided in your trip pack.
After check-in, meet your local leader and fellow travellers for a welcome briefing. This is your first chance to get to know the group, talk through the journey ahead, and ask any questions before heading into the highlands.
The rest of the afternoon is yours to unwind. Take a walk along the beach, relax by the pool, or simply reset after your travels. As evening arrives, gather for your first dinner together, a relaxed introduction to Sri Lankan flavours and the team you will be travelling with.
Tomorrow, the journey heads inland towards the Hill Country, where the trekking begins.
Distance: Minimal walking
Time: Approx. 1 hour transfer (group transfer)
Included
Transfer: Airport transfer to Negombo (designated group transfer)
Accommodation: Hotel, twin share basis
Meals: Dinner only
Into the highlands — Negombo to Nuwara Eliya
Leave the coast behind and begin the journey inland, travelling from Negombo into Sri Lanka’s central highlands. The drive takes around 6 to 7 hours, gradually climbing from sea level into cooler, greener landscapes where the air shifts and the pace slows.
As you gain altitude, the scenery begins to change. Palm-lined roads give way to rolling hills, dense vegetation and the first glimpses of tea plantations that define this region. It is a journey that feels like a transition, not just in landscape, but into a different side of Sri Lanka altogether.
Arrive into Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as Little England, known for its cooler climate, colonial architecture and neatly manicured tea gardens. Settle into your hotel and take some time to explore or simply enjoy the fresh mountain air.
This is a chance to reset before the trekking begins. Tomorrow, you step onto the Pekoe Trail and into the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country.
Time: Approx. 6 to 7 hours driving
Included
Transfer: Private vehicle transfer to Nuwara Eliya
Accommodation: Hotel, twin share basis
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
First steps on the trail — Horton Plains to Udaweriya
Step straight into the highlands as the trekking begins at Horton Plains, the highest point on the Pekoe Trail. The air is cooler here, the landscape more open, and the sense of space immediate. It is a strong start, setting the tone for the days ahead.
From the Farr Inn area, the trail leads out across wide, exposed terrain before beginning its descent towards Ohiya. This is where the character of the route starts to shift, as you join the upper section of the Devil’s Staircase, a historic route that winds its way down through the hills.
As the day unfolds, the trail moves deeper into more remote terrain. Long-range views open up across the highlands, and the landscape begins to soften into the first signs of tea country. By the time you reach the hidden valley of Udaweriya, there is a real sense of having left the outside world behind and stepped into something quieter and more remote.
Settle into camp for the evening, surrounded by the landscape you have just walked through. Dinner is shared together, marking the first full day on the trail.
Distance: 14.3 kilometres
Time: Approx. 4 hours walking
Included
Activity: Pekoe Trail Stage 11
Accommodation: Udaweriya Camping, twin share basis
Meals: Breakfast and dinner
Into the heart of the highlands — Udaweriya to Haputale
Today is the longest and most demanding stage of the trek, and one that brings together everything that makes the Pekoe Trail so rewarding. Leaving Udaweriya behind, the route leads you through a mix of landscapes that shift steadily throughout the day.
You move through the remote valley, passing abandoned estate settlements that hint at the region’s past, before climbing into high elevation forest and pine sections. The trail then opens out into the Idalgashinna railway country, where tracks cut through the hills and the views begin to stretch further with every step.
The final section follows sweeping ridgelines with wide, uninterrupted views across the highlands, before descending into Haputale. It is a full day on the trail, but one that offers a real sense of progression and achievement as the landscape unfolds around you.
Arriving in Haputale, check into your hotel and take time to rest and recover after a big day. Dinner is shared together, with time to reflect on one of the standout stages of the journey.
Distance: 19.68 kilometres
Time: Approx. 6 hours walking
Included
Activity: Pekoe Trail Stage 12
Accommodation: Hotel, twin share basis
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Along the tea ridgelines — Haputale to St. Catherine’s
Leave Haputale behind as the trail climbs steadily into cooler forest reserve, where the air feels fresh and the paths are quiet. It is a steady start to the day, easing back into the rhythm of the trail after yesterday’s longer stage.
As you move higher, the route opens out onto tea estate roads and scenic ridgelines. Views stretch across the Thotalagala and Dambatenne Valley, with glimpses towards Lipton’s Seat, one of the most iconic viewpoints in Sri Lanka’s tea country. This is classic hill country walking, where every turn reveals another layer of landscape.
The trail gradually leads you into the Nayabedda Estate and the village of St. Catherine’s, where daily life continues at a slower pace among the tea fields. It is a place that offers a closer look at the communities that shape this region and the story behind the landscape you have been walking through.
Settle into camp for the evening, surrounded by tea country. Dinner is shared together as the light fades over the hills.
Distance: 14.6 kilometres
Time: Approx. 4 hours walking
Included
Activity: Pekoe Trail Stage 13
Accommodation: Nayabedda or Dambethenna Camping, twin share basis
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
A change in pace — St. Catherine’s to Makulella
Today offers a shorter but equally rewarding stage, with a noticeable shift in landscape and pace. Leaving the high plateau behind, the trail begins to descend, moving through a patchwork of village life and cultivated land.
The route winds through small settlements, vegetable plots and eucalyptus groves, giving a closer look at daily life in the hills. Sections of estate road and forest trail connect these quieter corners, while occasional viewpoints open up towards the distinctive peak of Namunukula in the distance.
It is a more relaxed day on the trail, allowing time to take in the details, the sounds of the landscape, and the rhythm of life unfolding around you.
Arrive in Makulella and settle into your hotel, with time to rest and enjoy the surroundings. Dinner is shared together, rounding off a day that balances lighter walking with some of the most scenic views of the journey.
Distance: 9.36 kilometres
Time: Approx. 3 hours walking
Included
Activity: Pekoe Trail Stage 14
Accommodation: Hotel, twin share basis
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Final steps on the trail — Makulella to Ella, then on to Galle
Your final day on the Pekoe Trail begins with a gentle walk through quiet forest and tea country, easing you into the last stage of the journey. The trail leads towards the Ella Rock area, where the landscape feels both familiar and distinct, marking the closing chapter of your time in the highlands.
As you descend towards Kithal Ella and into Ella town, there is a real sense of completion. After days spent moving through remote valleys and ridgelines, you arrive in one of Sri Lanka’s best-known hill country destinations, bringing the trekking section of the journey to a natural close.
From here, leave the mountains behind and travel south to the coast. The drive to Galle takes you from cool highland air to warmer coastal surroundings, offering one final shift in landscape as the ocean comes into view.
Arrive in Galle and settle into your hotel, ready for a slower pace after your time on the trail.
Distance: 9.6 kilometres
Time: Approx. 3 hours walking, plus 4 hours transfer
Included
Activity: Pekoe Trail Stage 15
Transfer: Private vehicle transfer to Galle
Accommodation: Hotel, twin share basis
Meals: Breakfast only
Coastal contrast — exploring Galle
After several days on the trail, the pace shifts. This morning is yours to enjoy at your own rhythm. Take time to relax, wander the coastline, or simply ease into the slower feel of the south coast after your time in the highlands.
Later, head out with your leader to explore Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most characterful coastal towns. At its heart lies Galle Fort, surrounded on three sides by the ocean and shaped by centuries of history.
Walking through its narrow streets, you pass a mix of Dutch colonial buildings, ancient mosques and churches, grand mansions and small museums. There is a lived-in feel to the place too, with cafés, boutiques and restored townhouses now home to artists, writers and designers. It is a place that invites you to slow down and take it all in.
Your leader brings the history to life along the way, sharing stories that connect the past with the present.
The evening is free to explore further or find a spot by the sea to unwind.
Included
Activity: Guided walking tour of Galle Fort
Accommodation: Hotel, twin share basis
Meals: Breakfast only
Farewell Sri Lanka — until next time

A group transfer to the airport is included at a designated time. If your travel plans differ, you can arrange your own onward journey.
As you leave, there is time to reflect on the journey you have just completed. From the cool highlands and quiet trails of the Pekoe Trail to the warmth of the coast in Galle, this has been a journey through landscapes, communities and stories that many never get to experience.
More than the kilometres covered, it is the small moments that stay with you. The rhythm of life in the tea estates, the views from the ridgelines, and the shared experience of travelling as a group.
Whether you are heading home or continuing your travels, you leave with a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka and a collection of memories shaped by the trail.

Sri Lanka’s Hill Country offers a very different side of the island. Away from the coast and cultural hotspots, the Pekoe Trail opens up a landscape shaped by tea, history and community. This is not a route built for tourism alone. It has been carefully designed to connect people with place, following existing paths through tea estates, villages and highland terrain while protecting the environment it passes through.
The Pekoe Trail is rooted in low impact, responsible travel. It helps preserve biodiversity, keeps natural habitats intact and ensures that tourism directly supports the communities who live and work here. Walking this trail means contributing to a model of tourism that values long term sustainability over short term gain.
For you, it offers something deeper than a standard trek. You move through a landscape that is lived in, not staged. You see how tea is grown and harvested, pass through villages rarely visited by outsiders, and experience the rhythm of life in the hills as it unfolds around you.
Travelling in a small group, you move lightly through this environment, guided by local experts who bring context and understanding to every step. It is a way of exploring that prioritises connection, respect and real experience.
By choosing this journey, you are not only exploring one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic regions, you are supporting a way of travel that protects it.
As a small family business, a personal, friendly and knowledgeable service sits at the heart of your Pekoe Trail adventure. Every traveller arrives with different motivations, experience levels and questions, and you are supported from the moment you join the flock to long after you return home.
The team brings first hand experience of Sri Lanka and the Pekoe Trail itself, working closely with trusted local leaders and partners who know these trails, communities and landscapes inside out. This means the advice you receive is current, practical and grounded in real experience on the ground.
Whether you are thinking about kit, training, travel logistics, cultural awareness or what to expect day to day on the trail, you will receive clear and tailored guidance. Preparation is an important part of the journey, and you are supported every step of the way to ensure you arrive feeling ready, confident and excited for the adventure ahead.
Flights are not included in your Pekoe Trail Sri Lanka adventure, giving you the flexibility to travel from your preferred airport, use frequent flyer points or extend your time in Sri Lanka before or after your trip.
The main international gateway is Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, which is well connected with direct and indirect flights from the UK, Europe and beyond.
A designated group arrival transfer from the airport to your hotel in Negombo is included at a nominated time. If your flight does not align with this, you can arrange your own transfer, with full details provided in your trip pack. A group departure transfer to the airport is also included at a set time on the final day.

With the island’s location near the equator, Sri Lanka has a hot and humid climate. At the higher elevations, however, the climate is cool; the humidity is relatively lower in the northern and central parts of the country. Temperatures are fairly constant year round, with coastal regions enjoying average temperatures of 25-30°C and the highlands 15-18°C on average.
November
November is a transitional month. Rain and storms can be experienced across Sri Lanka with higher rainfall in the north and east coast and at the Cultural Triangle, though this can be a welcomed cooling relief. Weather conditions improve in the south and west as the month goes on, and by the end of the month the southern and western beaches will experience plenty of sunshine.
March
Arguably the best overall month for optimum weather conditions throughout Sri Lanka, March is expected to showcase the very best of Sri Lanka across every region. A predominantly dry month though temperatures start to rise along the southern and western coasts, pushing averages up towards the mid-30°C’s, but a little rainfall can be expected in the later stages of the month. On the east coast, things are starting to warm up and rain showers are becoming few and far between as April approaches.
Whichever month you decide, be sure to be prepared for all types of weather conditions from hot & humid, to light showers & heavy downpours to cool temps in the mountainous regions.
