Trek the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in aid of Blythe House Hospice – A Journey with Purpose
Leave the everyday behind and step into the raw beauty of the Andean Mountains on this mighty adventure.
Your Peruvian adventure kicks off in the historic city of Cusco, once the heartbeat of the Inca Empire. After settling into your hotel, there’s time to start easing into the altitude before gathering for a welcome dinner and your first taste of life in the Andes. The following day sees you journey into the Sacred Valley, where you’ll meet traditional Andean communities, learn about local customs, and soak up sweeping mountain vistas scattered with ancient terraces and quiet villages — a brilliant first glimpse into Peru’s rich culture and heritage.
From Day 4, it’s time to lace up your boots for the legendary Inca Trail — one of the most iconic trekking routes on the planet. Over four unforgettable days, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the Incas through cloud forest, high mountain passes, and remarkable archaeological sites. Each step brings a mix of challenge and reward as the trail winds ever closer to the majestic refuge of Machu Picchu, all supported by our expert local guides, porters, and chefs who help make the journey comfortable, memorable, and full of camaraderie.
Day 7 delivers the moment you’ve been building towards: reaching the Sun Gate and taking in your first spectacular view of Machu Picchu as the sun rises. You’ll then descend to explore the ruins in more depth before hopping aboard the scenic train back to Cusco. The following day is yours to enjoy at a gentler pace, with a guided city tour which includes visits to a variety of local museums and archaeological sites. Round off your final evening with your last dinner together as a team, before departing the next day — carrying home a pack full of unforgettable memories of Peru’s landscapes, history, and legendary warmth.
This is more than just a trek – it’s a chance to challenge yourself physically and mentally, to reconnect with nature, and to raise vital awareness and funds for a cause that matters.
While this trek is no walk in the park – expect steep, rocky trails and the added challenge of high altitude – it is an incredible experience for those with good health, fitness and the courage to take on a challenge and be part of something truly meaningful.

Acclimatisation Day Exploring the Sacred Valley
After breakfast at your hotel, you will be transferred past the impressive Inca complex of Saqsaywaman, an architectural masterpiece dominating the Cusco skyline, into the fertile lands of the Sacred Valley, where the Urubamba River meanders through breathtaking landscapes, to the town of Ollantaytambo (2792 m), often referred to as the “Last Living Inca City,” with its original layout preserved from Inca times.
Here, we will explore the majestic Temple of the Sun, marveling at the massive precision-cut stone blocks that highlight the extraordinary engineering of the Incas. As we descend to the town square, we’ll witness the ancient water channels and agricultural terraces still in use today. From below, the sight of Inca granaries clinging to the mountainsides offers a glimpse into the resourceful nature of Inca civilization.
From Ollantaytambo, we ascend again to the highlands of Chinchero (3762m), where we are welcomed by the Ccorccor community for an authentic Andean farm-to-table lunch prepared with fresh local ingredients and cooked using ancestral techniques. Beyond the meal, this immersive experience allows us to interact with local families, learning about traditional farming, weaving, and the spiritual connection between the Andean people and their land.
Back at the hotel, your Local Guide will provide you with a comprehensive trek briefing and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary clothing and equipment. Then it’s time to enjoy dinner and get a good night’s rest before leaving for the trail the following day.
Included:
Transfers: From hotel to Sacred Valley and return
Accommodation: Hotel (twin share basis)
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Trek the Inca Trail from Piscacucho (2385m) to Ayapata (2780m)
After an early breakfast you’ll be transferred from your hotel to Piscacucho, where you’ll start your trek. The trail starts at 2720m, crossing the Vilcanota River before climbing steeply through the cloud forest.
In time you will see the great views of an Inca fortress called ‘Huillca Raccay as well as the vast and incredible Inca site of ‘Llactapata’, and the Urubamba mountain range that divides the jungle, the Andes, and the beautiful snow-capped ‘W’akay Willca’, before arriving at your first camp in the Huayllabamba Valley.
Trekking details:
Distance covered: approx. 14 km / 8.5 mi
Trekking time: approx. 6-7 hr
Included:

Accommodation: Mountain tents (twin share basis)
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Trek the Inca Trail from Ayapata (3300m) to Chaquicocha (3600m)
It’s another early start as your cooks serve up a hearty breakfast to get your energy levels up. You’re going to need it – day 2 on the classic Inca Trail is generally regarded as the toughest day, and you have a steep ascent ahead as you follow a route that was sacred to the Incas, rising up into the Apus, where the mountain spirits dwell.
After a few hours, we will reach the highest pass on the trail, known as Abra de Warrmihuañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass (4200m). It’s a tough trek to get up to this point, but your Local Guide and crew will be with you all the way, one step at a time. The high altitude adds to the challenge, so don’t worry if you find yourself stopping every few steps – that’s perfectly normal. Once at the pass you’ll have a well-deserved rest and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery, before beginning the descent to our lunch stop at Pacaymayu (3550m). You may see lots of hummingbirds along the way, as well as other species of birds and a wide variety of native plants, including the Polylepis, a native tree that only grows in the cloud forest at this particular altitude.
After lunch, we’ll set off on another steep ascent to the Runkurakay pass (4000m) before we stop for the night at our second campsite Chaquicocha (3600m) where we have plenty of time to set up camp before dinner. Then it will be time for bed, your body tired but your mind exhilarated by the day’s achievements.

Trek the Inca Trail from Chaquicocha (3600m) to Wiñay Wayna (2680m)
After another energy-filled breakfast, you’ll set off on a relatively gentle uphill trek to the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca, “The City Above the Clouds,” (3680m). This enchanting Inca ruin features terraced slopes and five small stone baths that contain constant fresh running water during the wet season. From here, enjoy the incredible views of snow-capped peaks in the distance, including Salkantay and Veronica.
Heading on, you’ll walk up and down a series of Inca steps – more than 1000 in total! While not as physically difficult as the previous day’s trek, these steps put a lot of strain on the knees, especially going downhill, so take it slowly. Then we’ll pass through the cloud forest to the impressive agricultural Inca site of Intipata, one of the lesser-known ruins along the Inca Trail, with impressive agricultural terraces.
We will arrive at the third campsite at Wiñay Wayna (2680m) by lunchtime. We’ll have lunch and a rest, and then go on a short walk to explore the nearby archaeological site, featuring magnificent agricultural terraces as well as numerous Inca buildings displaying a high level of Inca masonry, and a series of 10 baths, which suggests that the site was once a religious centre of water worship.
We are now close to our final destination and the end of our trek. We’ll have dinner at the campsite and rest in advance of the next day and our arrival at Machu Picchu.

From there, you’ll begin your descent, walking in the footsteps of the Inca along the Panoramic Terrace Route, which is the upper section of the archaeological site. This circuit leads us to the main viewpoint, the picture-perfect perch from where you can take an iconic postcard shot of Machu Picchu before making a deeper exploration of other parts of the archaeological sites.
Afterward, we will descend to the town of Aguas Calientes to board the scenic train back through the Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, your private transport will take you to your hotel in Cusco.

Trekking experience and trek grading – ‘Tough’
This is a strenuous trek in a remote area of South America. It is graded ‘Tough’ due to the warm conditions and high-altitude trekking. The trip is designed for confident trekkers who are looking for a short yet rewarding mountain ascent. Although this trek is not technically difficult, you should be an experienced walker as trails can be very stony. Most routes follow established trails but there are some rough paths that involve walking on scree. All 4 days walking include full porterage and you should be prepared for a couple of long days with some boulders and steep sections (maximum 8-9 hours).
As with any trek in mountainous/high altitude areas, safety is paramount and your leader will always make decisions to amend the itineraries to ensure the safety of the whole group.
This trip includes one or more overnight stays over 2500 metres/11500ft, where there is a genuine risk of being affected by Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). If left untreated AMS can be life-threatening. We would expect the majority of the team to notice the effects of being at high altitude, and while most will only feel discomfort and headaches, it is not uncommon for a small number of people to need extra care which will be provided by our leaders and local crew.
During your pre-trek briefing, altitude sickness will be discussed in more detail along with advice on how to best cope with it. The most important thing is not to fear it, but to respect it. Know the signs & symptoms of AMS, be aware of how it affects the body and report any illness to your leader straight away. Our leaders and crew are there to help and are fully experienced with high altitude conditions and all the scenarios that trekking at these altitudes bring. You’re in good hands.
The best way to adjust to altitude is to walk slowly, rest as often as possible and drink plenty of water! Rest assured your Leader is experienced in high altitude trekking and will advise you accordingly if you are starting to feel the effects of altitude.
The weather on the Inca Trail varies; October is generally at the end of the dry season. Temperature-wise, the maximum daytime temperature is fairly consistent at ~20-22oC year-round but overnight temperatures are much lower, particularly at higher altitudes.
Hotel (4 nights twin share rooms) and camping (3 nights, shared 2 person tents)
We’ve sourced our accommodation very carefully in Cusco and picked a locally owned hotel in line with the Adventurous Ewe style of travel, but please note that service and accommodation in Peru may be different to western standards. The rooms are on a twin share basis.
Whilst on the trek there are 3 nights camping. We use high quality mountain tents which are of expedition quality. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single member of the team of the same sex. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and mat, although you can hire these items if you prefer. We have a dining tent with a table and chairs for meal times, along with portable toilets and toilet tents. The crew will set up and pack down all tents so you will be looked after very well.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. Boiled water is also provided by the trek crew. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.
