Overview

This is your chance to experience the very best of the Julian Alps in just 4 days — a journey full of character that blends alpine culture, dramatic landscapes and Slovenia’s iconic summit, Mt Triglav (2,864m). You’ll travel through a world of pristine peaks, pine forests, alpine meadows, clear rivers and rocky ridgelines before tackling the country’s highest mountain using via ferrata with the support of fully qualified local IFMGA guides.

The ascent of Triglav is every bit as exciting as its reputation suggests. Its name, meaning “three-headed”, hints at the mountain’s distinctive form and long-held place in Slovenian identity — appearing on the national flag and woven into local tradition. For many Slovenes, standing on the summit is considered a patriotic milestone, and you’ll feel that sense of heritage as you climb.

The final ridges are an inspiring mix of scrambling and beginner-friendly via ferrata, with full instruction and kit provided. The trail is airy, exposed in places and incredibly rewarding. From the summit, you’ll look out across a vast panorama of the Julian Alps, and on a clear day, as far as Austria, Italy and Croatia.

Along the way, you’ll stay in classic alpine hut high in the mountains, sharing space with local hikers and absorbing a slice of true mountain culture after long days on rugged terrain. Wildlife is ever-present, from marmots and chamois to the possibility of spotting golden eagles or griffon vultures overhead.

Bookended by two nights at beautiful Lake Bled, this tailor-made adventure gives you space to explore one of Europe’s most picturesque lakes before and after the climb. With its combination of culture, scenery, technical challenge and expert guidance, it’s an ideal intro to Slovenia’s beautiful alpine world.

Day 1
Arrival in Slovenia and transfer to Lake Bled (approx. 25 mins)

Welcome to Slovenia — a land of shimmering lakes, forested mountains and the proud summit of Triglav rising above it all. On arrival at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, you’ll be met by your local host and transferred to your accommodation in Lake Bled. The fixed-time group transfer is scheduled to coincide with the recommended UK flight; if you arrive earlier, it’s easy to take a taxi direct to Bled.

Once checked in, you’ll have the chance to meet & mingle, prepare final bits of kit and explore Bled’s iconic lakeside paths. With its island church, medieval clifftop castle and turquoise water, it’s an atmospheric place to ease into the rhythm of the Julian Alps. Why not take a refreshing dip before wandering into town for dinner.

Enjoy a relaxed evening and a good night’s sleep ahead of your mountain trek.

Included
Transfer: Private vehicle transfer from Ljubljana to Lake Bled
Accommodation: Hotel Astoria Bled (Superior room twin share)
Meals: None

Day 2
Transfer from Bled to Krma Valley and trek to Triglavski Dom (2,515m)

After breakfast, you meet your IFMGA Guide and begin your journey into Triglav National Park with a scenic one-hour transfer through forested tracks and alongside a wild, glacial river. The drive brings you to the peaceful Krma Valley, the starting point of your ascent.

Your trek begins gently through alpine meadows and pine forest before rising steadily onto a wide high plateau with ever-expanding views across the Julian Alps. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you traverse the shoulders of Triglav and make your final push towards Triglavski Dom — the highest mountain hut in Slovenia and home to the country’s highest meteorological station.

At 2,515m, the hut enjoys a dramatic perch among the peaks. Settle in with a hot drink, take in the views or wander to a quiet vantage point for sunset. Your Guide will decide whether the summit attempt takes place this afternoon or early tomorrow morning, depending on conditions. If the climb is planned for the following day, the afternoon offers time to rest, meet fellow trekkers from around the world and enjoy the remarkable alpine setting.

Distance: approx. 15 km
Ascent: 1,650 m
Trekking time: approx. 6–7 hours

Included
Accommodation: Traditional mountain hut (dorm room basis)
Meals: Breakfast and dinner (please provide your own packed lunch)

Please note, you’re welcome to leave any extra luggage at the hotel while you’re on the mountain.

Day 3
Triglavski Dom to Triglav summit, return to Lake Bled

Wake early this morning to watch the sunrise over the Julian Alps — a spectacular moment as the first light casts a warm glow across the rocky peaks surrounding Triglavski Dom.

If your summit bid is planned for today, you set off at first light in small guided teams. Leaving your main gear at the hut, you climb the final 400 metres along the East Ridge, travelling light for the ascent. The route is wonderfully exposed and atmospheric, following a thrilling section of via ferrata with fixed cables and ladders that lead you towards the summit. Wearing a harness and moving under the close supervision of your IFMGA Guide, you’ll feel well supported.

The scrambling is exciting, the backdrop extraordinary, and the final traverse over Mali Triglav (Little Triglav) brings you to the iconic summit of Mt Triglav (2,864m). Standing on the highest point in Slovenia is a powerful moment — with 360° views stretching across the Julian Alps and, on clear days, into Austria and Italy. Take time for photos, a deep breath of mountain air and a moment to savour where you are.

After returning to Triglavski Dom for lunch, the descent begins. You follow a long, rewarding trail back down through rocky slopes, high alpine meadows and forested valleys. In summer, these pastures are still used for traditional cattle grazing — a reminder of the deep cultural connection local communities have with the mountains.

Reaching the Krma Valley, you transfer back to Lake Bled, where hot showers, comfortable beds and a well-earned dinner await.

Distance: approx. 15 km
Ascent: 349 m
Descent: 1,950 m
Trekking time: approx. 8–9 hours

Included
Accommodation: Hotel Astoria Bled (twin-share Superior rooms)
Meals: Breakfast only

Day 4
Farewell Slovenia

Your Triglav adventure comes to a close this morning. After breakfast, you transfer from Lake Bled to Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport at the designated group transfer time.

You leave Slovenia with tired legs, a full heart, and the unforgettable experience of standing atop the country’s highest and most symbolic mountain — along with memories of alpine sunrises, airy ridgelines and the quiet beauty of the Julian Alps.

Included
Transfer: Lake Bled to Ljubljana Airport (designated group transfer time)
Meals: Breakfast only

Why go

Climbing Mt Triglav is far more than reaching the highest summit in Slovenia — it’s a journey into one of the world’s leading nations for sustainable tourism, and an opportunity to experience the Julian Alps through the eyes of the people who call these mountains home.

Slovenia is the first country to be declared a Green Destination of the World. Everywhere you look — from forested Alpine peaks to glacial rivers, hidden karst landscapes, vineyard-lined hills and the calm waters of Lake Bled — the country’s commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage is unmistakable. Slovenians deeply value their green surroundings, and they welcome travellers who share that respect. Climbing Triglav places you right at the heart of that philosophy.

The route carries you into Triglav National Park, a protected alpine region where traditional lifestyles remain closely connected to the land. Mountain huts are locally run, food is sourced from regional producers, and long-standing customs still shape life in the high pastures. By travelling here, you help support the guides, hut keepers, farmers and small businesses who sustain this remarkable landscape.

Your park entry fees and hut stays contribute directly to conservation projects, trail upkeep, wildlife monitoring and the long-term protection of fragile alpine ecosystems. Moving through the mountains at a human pace — on foot across rocky ridgelines — allows you to appreciate firsthand the delicate balance that keeps these environments thriving.

By choosing to trek with Adventurous Ewe, you minimise your footprint while maximising your positive impact. Our small-group approach reduces pressure on trails and mountain facilities. We work with highly qualified local IFMGA Guides who are paid fairly, insured properly and trained in responsible mountain leadership. You’re encouraged to use a Water-to-Go bottle to reduce plastic waste, and our Leave No Trace practices ensure the mountains remain just as you found them.

This is adventure with purpose: a chance to stand on Slovenia’s most symbolic summit, connect with its alpine culture and support a nation leading the way in sustainable tourism.

Every trip we operate is built in line with our Travelife Partner certification, reflecting our ongoing commitment to responsible travel and continuous improvement in sustainability across all our operations.

Carbon Footprint

We’ve calculated the total carbon footprint of the Mt Triglav Trek and ensure that we plant or protect enough trees to remove twice the amount of carbon produced by your trip.

What’s the number?

The average carbon footprint for the Mt Triglav Trek is 41kg of CO₂ per person.
This includes emissions from local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, crew and office operations.

The only element not included is travel to and from Slovenia. Because guests join us from across the UK (and further afield), individual travel plans vary significantly, making it impossible to provide a single reliable figure for this part of the journey.

How does it compare?

To put 41kg of CO₂ into perspective:

  • Driving 1,000 miles / 1,609 km produces approx. 281kg CO₂ in an average car (or 140.5kg per person with two passengers).

  • A return economy flight from London to New York emits approx. 1,619kg CO₂ per person.

  • Ten trees in a temperate forest remove approx. 250kg CO₂ over 5–10 years.

What are we doing about it?

Our adventures are intentionally low-carbon by design, and we’re committed to long-term carbon reduction across all operations. After extensive research into climate-focused organisations, we chose to partner with Cool Earth, a charity working hand-in-hand with rainforest communities to halt deforestation — one of the most effective climate actions on the planet.

We invest 1% of our total revenue into critical global conservation projects through Cool Earth.

Closer to home, we’re proud business members of the Snowdonia Society. Jim, Sue and several of our local leaders regularly join their conservation days — from planting native trees to helping maintain habitats — to support the landscapes where Adventurous Ewe began.

Why this matters

We believe that meaningful travel comes with meaningful responsibility. Tourism is one of the world’s largest and most influential industries, providing livelihoods for millions. Small-scale, low-impact adventure travel — when done responsibly — can support communities, protect wild places and create genuine cultural exchange.

Passport

Slovenia follows Schengen area entry rules. Your passport must:

  • Have a date of issue less than 10 years before the day you arrive
(If your passport was renewed before 1 October 2018, double-check this carefully — some renewals were issued with extra validity.)

  • Have an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area
(The expiry date does not need to fall within 10 years of the issue date.)

Important checks

Make sure you:

  • ensure the entry stamp is clearly readable when you enter the Schengen area for the first time — officials may ask to see proof of onward or return travel

  • carry your passport when crossing borders, including within the Schengen area

  • meet all entry and exit conditions for your nationality

For the most up-to-date official guidance, please check your government’s travel advice:

Visa

Slovenia is part of the Schengen area, meaning many travellers — including those from the UK and Australia — can enter Slovenia without a visa for short stays.

Entry and exit conditions can change, sometimes at short notice, so it’s important to check the latest requirements before you travel. For personalised advice on visas, currency regulations or customs/quarantine rules, contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Slovenia.

Please ensure you meet all entry conditions for your nationality. Government agencies (including the Australian government) cannot assist if you do not meet these requirements.

Border Measures

Slovenia’s land borders remain open, though random checks may occur — particularly at crossings with Croatia, Austria and Hungary. Allow extra time if you are travelling overland.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is an essential part of your Mt Triglav Trek — and it’s compulsory for all participants. Your policy must provide comprehensive cover for:

  • The full value of your trip

  • Medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation

  • All activities undertaken on the trek, including via ferrata, alpine scrambling and altitude of 2,864m

  • Personal liability

  • Trip cancellation and curtailment

  • Loss of luggage, personal belongings and delays

  • Pandemic-related travel disruptions, where applicable

To ensure you’re fully protected, please check that your policy specifically includes via ferrata as an insured activity, as this is a key component of the Mt Triglav ascent.

For UK residents, we’ve partnered with Campbell Irvine Direct, a specialist travel insurance provider offering cover tailored to adventure travel. If you’d like a quote that aligns with the requirements of this trek, you can visit their website here.

Important:
We strongly recommend arranging travel insurance as soon as you book your trip to ensure you’re covered for unexpected events that might prevent you from travelling.

Vaccinations and allergies

Vaccinations

There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements for travel to Slovenia. However, we recommend ensuring your tetanus vaccination is up to date.

For the most accurate and up-to-date health guidance, please consult your GP or travel health practitioner at least 8 weeks before departure, and review the latest advice from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC):
https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/country/198/slovenia

Severe Allergies

If you have a severe allergy, please let us know at the time of booking. We will always do our best to support you, but we are unable to guarantee an allergen-free environment on this trip.

You must carry your own treatment for any allergy, including adrenaline auto-injectors, as these are not carried as standard by Adventurous Ewe leaders or crew.

Your leader will already be aware of your medical information, but please also:

  • inform your leader on arrival of your allergy

  • let them know where your adrenaline pen is kept

  • keep your medication easily accessible at all times

Your safety is our priority, and we’re here to support you throughout your adventure.

Mountain Guides and Crew

You’ll be accompanied by highly qualified IFMGA-certified Mountain Guides for the ascent and descent of Mt Triglav. This is the highest professional guiding qualification in the world, accredited by the International Federation of Mountain Guiding Associations. IFMGA guides are trained to lead, instruct and coach across all key mountain disciplines — mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing and ski touring — ensuring you’re in expert hands for the technical and exposed sections of the route.

Your IFMGA Guide brings extensive experience of the Julian Alps, deep local knowledge and a calm, supportive approach. They are fully First Aid trained, bilingual (English and Slovenian), and responsible for your safety on the mountain, including all via ferrata sections, scrambling terrain and summit decision-making. Expect professionalism, clear instruction, steady pacing and plenty of reassurance when you need it.

Outside the ascent and descent phases, you’ll be supported throughout the trip by your dedicated Adventurous Ewe host. They help coordinate logistics, answer questions, provide pre- and post-trek support, and ensure the group feels well looked after from the moment you arrive in Slovenia to the moment you depart.

Both your IFMGA Guide and Adventurous Ewe host work closely together to create a safe, enjoyable and well-managed journey.

Group size

We proudly specialise in small group adventures — not only to create a more personal and supportive experience, but also to minimise environmental impact, enhance safety on the mountain and allow for genuine connection with the landscapes and communities you travel through.

For this tailor made Mt Triglav Trek operates with a minimum group size of 8 and a maximum of 12 trekkers. This keeps the team close-knit, ensures excellent guide-to-trekker ratios for the via ferrata and summit sections, and creates the right conditions for a safe, positive and united ascent.

You’re welcome to join this adventure as a solo traveller, with friends or family, or as part of a fundraising challenge. Many of our trekkers climb Triglav in celebration of personal milestones, charity projects or simply to experience Slovenia’s most iconic peak with like-minded people.

If you have a group of 4 or more, we’d be delighted to organise a private departure tailored specifically for your team, charity or organisation. Whether you’re planning around specific dates, preferred pacing or a particular focus, we can shape the trek to suit your needs.

Trip grading

Trekking Experience & Trip Grading – ‘Tough’

This is a strenuous 2-day trek in the Julian Alps and is graded ‘Tough’ due to the long days on the trail, significant elevation gain and loss, alpine scrambling and the via ferrata section leading to the summit of Mt Triglav. It’s ideal for confident trekkers looking for a short yet rewarding alpine ascent, combined with the opportunity to learn new mountain skills.

Although the trek is not technically difficult, you should be an experienced walker with good fitness and a head for heights. The route follows a well-established mountain trail, but there are exposed sections along ridgelines where you’ll use via ferrata equipment — a harness, safety lanyard and helmet (all provided). No previous via ferrata experience is required, as full instruction and close support are provided by your IFMGA Mountain Guide.

As with any mountain journey, safety is paramount. Your Guide may adjust the itinerary or timings depending on weather and conditions to ensure the wellbeing of the whole team.

Climbing Mt Triglav is a short but physically demanding objective. On Day 2 and Day 3 you’ll be hiking approx 8 hours a day, with sustained ascents and descents on rocky, uneven mountain terrain.

What experience do I need?

You should be:

  • confident moving over rocky and uneven ground

  • comfortable with heights and exposure

  • able to maintain steady effort on long days

  • keen to try via ferrata under expert guidance

The summit via ferrata involves climbing cables and ladders while securely attached to fixed ropes. It does not require any climbing background — just focus, coordination and willingness to follow your Guide’s instructions.

How to prepare

To enjoy this trip fully, some targeted training is recommended. The best preparation is spending time in the hills at home, ideally tackling routes with 1,000–1,500m of total elevation gain. Complement this with regular cardio, leg strength and flexibility work.

What do I need to carry?

On Day 2 and Day 3, you’ll carry a small overnight pack with:

  • essential hiking gear

  • water and snacks

  • extra layers

  • personal items for one night in the mountain hut

Bedding is provided in the hut, and excess luggage can be left at your hotel in Lake Bled.

Training

The Mt Triglav Trek is graded Tough, and thoughtful preparation will make a big difference to both your safety and your enjoyment. With long trekking days, significant elevation gain, rocky alpine terrain and an exposed via ferrata summit ridge, you’ll need solid fitness, steady endurance and confidence moving over uneven ground.

You don’t need to be a technical climber or elite athlete — but you should be comfortable hiking for consecutive days with a small pack, tackling steep ascents and descents, and managing periods of exposure on ridgelines.

What to focus on:

Endurance walking
Regular full-day hikes (5–7 hours) on hilly or uneven terrain are the best preparation. If possible, aim for some back-to-back training days to mimic the demands of Day 2 and Day 3.

Leg & core strength
Strengthen your legs and core with step-ups, lunges, squats, stair training and uphill hiking. These help you cope with the long ascents and manage the big descent from the summit.

Cardiovascular fitness
Incorporate steady cardio such as running, cycling, fast hiking or swimming to improve aerobic fitness — essential for maintaining a consistent pace on sustained climbs.

Carrying a daypack
Train with a small pack (approx. 8–10kg) to mirror what you’ll carry to the hut and on summit day. This builds balance, comfort and endurance.

Terrain confidence
Practice on rocky paths, loose ground, uneven steps and, if possible, narrow ridgelines. Feeling sure-footed makes the via ferrata and scrambling sections feel far more manageable.

Head for heights
The summit ridge is exposed in places. Spending time on higher trails, rocky viewpoints or scrambling routes at home can help increase your confidence.

Mental resilience
Long days, basic hut facilities and variable alpine weather can be testing. A positive, flexible mindset — and a team-first approach — is just as important as physical fitness.

Training support from us

To help you prepare, you’ll receive a dedicated Training Guide once you book — complete with practical advice, suggested weekly plans and tips tailored to this two-day alpine ascent.

The fitter and more prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy every step — from the forested valleys to the airy summit ridge.

Our motto:
Train hard, smile harder and enjoy the journey!

Weather

The climbing season for Mt Triglav runs from July to October, with early and late-season ascents sometimes possible depending on conditions. Even in midsummer, temperatures on the mountain can feel surprisingly cool — while the Slovenian plains may reach 30°C, the summit can sit as low as 5°C, and it often drops below freezing overnight.

Snow patches can linger year-round in shaded gullies, and conditions on the mountain are known to change quickly. Wind, rain and occasional snow are all possible, even in the heart of summer, so it’s important to be prepared with suitable warm layers and waterproofs.

We recommend checking the latest mountain forecast in the days leading up to your trek:
https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Triglav/forecasts/2864

Your IFMGA Guide will make final decisions on timing and route choice based on weather and safety.

Accommodation

3 nights included

  • Hotel Astoria Bled – 2 nights, Superior twin-share rooms

  • Mountain hut – 1 night, dormitory-style shared rooms

We’ve chosen accommodation carefully to balance comfort, sustainability and proximity to the heart of the Julian Alps.

Hotel Astoria Bled (2 nights)

Just a five-minute walk from the shore of Lake Bled, Hotel Astoria offers a calm, comfortable base before and after your Triglav ascent. The hotel is widely recognised for its sustainability achievements, holding both the Slovenia Green Accommodation certificate and the EU EKO Marjetica eco-label for environmentally responsible tourism.

Rooms are modern, comfortable and well equipped — an ideal place to rest, prepare and enjoy a little luxury before and after life in the mountains.

Mountain Hut (1 night)

During the trek, you’ll stay in a traditional Julian Alps mountain hut in dormitory-style rooms (typically 4+ people). Bedding is provided.
Facilities are simple and authentic — basic toilets and running water are available, but showers are not provided at high-altitude huts. Meals are home-cooked, hearty and perfectly suited to long days on the trail.

Private rooms may be available on request in some huts; please enquire at the time of booking.

Single Travellers

Our small-group adventures are priced based on shared accommodation to keep your trip affordable. Solo travellers will share with others of the same gender in rooms ranging from twins to multi-share dorms.

Food & drinks

What’s Included

  • 3 breakfasts (buffet breakfasts at Hotel Astoria Bled; continental breakfast in the mountain hut)

  • 1 dinner at the mountain hut

Breakfasts in Bled are served buffet-style with a wide range of hot and cold options. At the mountain hut, expect a simpler continental-style breakfast perfect for fuelling your day.

Dinner in the hut is typically a two-course Slovenian alpine meal, often featuring hearty dishes such as goulash, spaghetti, dumplings or alpine stew, followed by fruit, strudel, pancakes or pudding.

Lunches, snacks and drinks

Lunch is not included, giving you flexibility to choose what you prefer and sample local foods. You can stock up on snacks and lunch items in Bled before the ascent, and additional food, snacks and drinks can be purchased in mountain huts during the trek.

Drinking water

Tap or stream water on the mountain is not safe to drink untreated. Please bring:

  • Purification tablets or

  • A filter bottle (a Water-to-Go bottle is ideal)

We strongly discourage buying single-use plastic bottles during the trek. Bottled water is sold in mountain huts, but purchasing it increases waste in sensitive alpine environments. Perfect trip to use your Adventurous Ewe Water-to-Go bottle, helping reduce plastic waste in this pristine region.

Dietary requirements

If you have dietary requirements or allergies, please let us know at the time of booking. Mountain huts can cater for many needs with advance notice, and we’ll do everything we can to support you.

Your Mt Triglav Trek has been designed to support Slovenia’s forward-thinking approach to sustainable tourism while ensuring mountain communities, local guides and environmentally sensitive alpine landscapes benefit directly from your adventure.

Responsible Travel in Action

  • You climb with local IFMGA certified Mountain Guide/s ensuring that tourism income goes directly into Slovenian hands and supports professional livelihoods rooted in the mountains.
  • Accommodation is arranged in smaller-scale, locally owned mountain hut and hotel, helping sustain family-run businesses in the Julian Alps and ensuring your visit has a positive economic impact.
  • Food and drink are sourced locally wherever possible, from hut dinners to meals in locally owned restaurants at Lake Bled — supporting growers, producers and small businesses.
  • Plastic waste is minimised throughout your journey. You’re encouraged to use your Water-to-Go bottle to reduce single-use plastic, helping protect Slovenia’s pristine rivers, forests and alpine environments.
  • Your journey promotes meaningful cultural exchange, from sharing hut life with Slovenian hikers to learning about Triglav’s traditions and the deep symbolism the mountain holds in Slovenian identity.
  • A Leave No Trace ethos underpins the entire trek. Trails are respected, waste is carried out, wildlife is observed but never disturbed, and the environment is left exactly as you found it.
  • A portion of every booking supports Cool Earth, our long-term environmental charity partner working with Indigenous communities to protect threatened rainforest around the world. This forms part of our commitment to give back as we explore, supporting global conservation far beyond the Julian Alps.

Your Role as a Responsible Traveller

  • Leave no trace: Carry out all rubbish and recycle where possible.
  • Respect wildlife: Observe animals from a distance and never feed them.
  • Reduce plastic waste: Use your Water-to-Go bottle and avoid single-use items.
  • Be considerate in mountain huts: Keep noise low, conserve water and follow hut etiquette.
  • Travel light: Only carry what you need on flights and remove unnecessary packaging from items before departing.
  • Respect local culture: Greet people warmly, follow guide advice and honour Triglav’s mountain traditions.
  • Protect fragile environments: Stay on marked trails and avoid damaging vegetation or disturbing wildlife.

Together, we can help protect Slovenia’s alpine landscapes, support local communities and ensure these mountains continue to inspire future generations of explorers.
