Overview

Jordan’s desert landscapes hold stories carved over millennia — from ancient caravan routes and Nabataean trading paths to the great sandstone cities that once linked Damascus, Jerusalem, Cairo and Mecca. At the heart of these routes lies the Jordan Trail, a continuous 650km, 40-day trekking path crossing the entire country through rugged cliffs, sculpted sandstone, enchanting wadis and remarkable archaeological sites. For those short on time, this adventure offers the chance to experience some of its most spectacular and lesser-known sections — all within a single, powerful journey.

Your adventure begins in the vast wilderness of Wadi Rum, the “Valley of the Moon,” where wind-shaped jebels rise from red desert sands and silence stretches to every horizon. Traversing hidden gorges, narrow siqs and ancient wadis, you’ll follow the same landscapes once crossed by Nabataean traders and Bedouin nomads. Nights are spent in traditional Bedouin desert camps, sharing firelight, open skies and a pace of life shaped entirely by the rhythm of the land.

Over five immersive trekking days, the route leads north toward Petra, weaving across sandstone ridges and shaded gullies, past rock art, seasonal springs, Bedouin tents and valleys rarely visited by travellers. Descending through Wadi Sabra, an ancient approach route used by caravans for centuries, you’ll enter Petra the most atmospheric way possible — via its dramatic hidden “backdoor.” Emerging from wild desert into the world-famous UNESCO site brings a sense of arrival that’s both emotional and unforgettable.

Your journey through Petra continues with a climb to the Monastery, sweeping desert views, and a quieter route into Little Petra, once a key Nabataean stopover along the Silk Road. From here, you’ll be welcomed into Safi Kitchen, a community-run initiative where local women share traditional dishes, personal stories and Jordanian hospitality — a powerful cultural experience that directly supports the community.

To close the journey, you’ll head to the Dead Sea for a final evening of rest, reflection and buoyant floating in the mineral-rich waters before your departure.

This is a trek shaped by culture, desert landscapes, connection and discovery — an extraordinary way to experience Jordan’s natural beauty, living heritage and warm hospitality, all while travelling responsibly and supporting the people who call these desert valleys home.

Once booked, we’ll share the recommended flights that align with the included group airport transfer, ensuring a smooth arrival and an easy start to your adventure.

You’ll be met by your local team who will guide you through immigration and assist with arrival formalities. Once outside the terminal, your private transfer will be waiting to take you to your hotel in Madaba.

Included
Transfer: Private transfer from Queen Alia International Airport to your hotel in Madaba
Accommodation: Hotel in Madaba (twin-share)
Meals: Dinner (depending on flight arrival time)

DAY 2

Madaba to Wadi Rum • Desert Trek • Camp Under the Stars

After breakfast, depart Madaba and journey south into the legendary landscapes of Wadi Rum — a vast, hauntingly beautiful desert described by T.E. Lawrence as “vast, echoing and god-like.”

Wind, time and ancient tectonic forces have sculpted Wadi Rum into a maze of towering sandstone jebels, sweeping sand plains and narrow gorges. It remains largely untouched, and stepping into it feels like stepping onto another planet — which is why it’s nicknamed the Valley of the Moon.

This afternoon, begin your first desert walk. The trek leads you through a small, dramatic gorge framed by immense rock walls that shift in colour from gold to deep rose as the light changes. It’s a spectacular introduction to the wilderness you’ll call home for the next few nights — a place where silence feels endless and the sky stretches without interruption.

As evening falls, settle into your Martian Desert Camp, your Bedouin-style base surrounded by sand dunes and starlight. Enjoy a warm welcome, desert hospitality and dinner beneath one of the clearest night skies on Earth.

Activity
Trekking distance: 4–5 km
Trekking time: approx. 3 hours

Included
Transfer: Private transfer to the trek start
Accommodation: Martian Desert Camp (twin-share)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3

Trek from Humeima to Wadi Aheimar

After breakfast, leave camp and transfer to the ancient ruins of Humeima, a former Nabataean trading post later occupied by the Romans and Umayyads. It’s a fascinating place to begin the longest and most varied day of your Jordan Trail journey.

From Humeima, the trail leads northeast across wide sandstone plateaus and past scattered Bedouin tents — a landscape shaped by wind, time and tradition. The terrain soon shifts as you descend into valleys carved from pale, chalky sandstone, before entering a spectacular narrow siq of red and white stone. This shaded slot canyon is one of the true highlights of the day, its sculpted walls glowing with shifting colours as the light moves overhead.

Beyond the siq, the route twists through a wide wadi littered with granite and sandstone boulders. After rainfall, small pools gather here, especially near Ain Aheimar, a natural spring sheltered beneath the branches of an ancient fig tree — a rare oasis in the desert.

Your day finishes in the vast sandy floor of Wadi Aheimar, where your campsite sits tucked beneath towering cliffs. As sunset settles over the desert and the night sky fills with stars, this quiet corner becomes one of the most memorable overnight spots of the trek.

Activity
Trekking distance: approx. 26.4 km
Trekking time: approx. 8 – 9.5 hours

Included
Accommodation: Wild Desert Camp (twin-share)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4

Trek from Wadi Aheimar to Wadi Gseib

Set off from camp and follow a gentle trail into Wadi Rakiya, a soft, sandy valley edged by rolling dunes. As you climb steadily to a higher viewpoint, the landscape opens up into sweeping vistas across Wadi al-Seeq — a classic Jordanian panorama of sculpted stone and endless desert horizons.

From here, the terrain transitions into wide plains and bands of coloured sandstone ridges. Shades of pink, gold and deep red shift around you as you continue north, each turn revealing new textures and ancient geological layers shaped over millennia.

The trail then descends into a series of narrower wadis before emerging into the spacious, tranquil valley of Wadi Gseib. Enclosed by cliffs and sheltered from the wind, it’s a peaceful and atmospheric place to camp for the night — one of the Jordan Trail’s quieter gems.

Activity
Trekking distance: approx. 15.3 km
Trekking time: approx. 6 – 7 hours

Included
Accommodation: Wild Desert Camp (twin-share)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5

Trek from Wadi Gseib to Wadi Al-Saif

Leaving Wadi Gseib, the trail begins to climb steadily into a rugged mountain landscape. You’ll cross a low pass with wide-open views before descending sharply into the secluded valley of Wadi Mshazza, where the terrain becomes more dramatic and broken by sandstone cliffs.

From here, the route rises again towards the head of Wadi al-Saif, a striking amphitheatre of rock walls shaped by centuries of wind and water. The final stretch follows a 4×4 track through open desert until you reach a remarkable sandstone boulder etched with Nabataean rock art — carvings of camels, gazelles and sheep that mark this place as an ancient waypoint.

This evocative site, rich in history and surrounded by towering cliffs, is your campsite for the night. It’s a beautiful and atmospheric spot to experience Jordan’s desert heritage under the night sky.

Activity
Trekking distance: approx. 14.8 km
Trekking time: approx. 5 – 6 hours

Included
Accommodation: Wild Desert Camp (twin-share)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6

Trek from Wadi Al-Saif to Gaa’ Mriebed

Today’s journey leads you through some of the most peaceful and quietly beautiful terrain of the trek. The morning begins along shaded gullies and rolling sandstone ridges, where the rock shifts from soft gold to deep rose as the sun moves overhead. The trail then joins a traditional donkey path, winding its way through rocky hills shaped by centuries of desert winds.

Midway, you’ll arrive at Ain al-O’Rouq, a reliable natural spring and an important water source for Bedouins and travellers alike. It’s a welcome rest stop — a place where life gathers in an otherwise arid landscape.

From the spring, the trail climbs gently northward before opening out into the wide, scenic basin of Gaa’ Mriebed. Bedouin families still camp in this area, and small cultivated fields sit tucked between rugged sandstone slopes. Your campsite tonight enjoys sweeping desert views and offers a chance to meet local shepherds and experience the enduring rhythms of Bedouin life.

Activity
Trekking distance: approx. 13.8 km
Trekking time: approx. 4 – 5 hours

Included
Accommodation: Wild Desert Camp (twin-share)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7

Trek from Gaa’ Mriebed to Petra

The final stage of your desert journey is nothing short of extraordinary. You begin by descending into Wadi Sabra, a dramatic sandstone canyon once used as an ancient caravan route leading directly into Petra. Its sculpted walls, soft light and sense of history set the tone for an unforgettable day.

As you follow the winding path, you’ll pass the remains of a Nabataean fortress and the dramatic Sabra Amphitheatre, carved into the rock in the same style that makes Petra iconic. The trail continues through twisting canyons, over dry waterfalls and across rugged rocky terrain as it climbs steadily toward the Petra highlands.

Gradually, the outer valleys of Petra reveal themselves — soft pink cliffs, weathered facades and the first hints of the city carved entirely from stone. Then comes the moment you’ve been waiting for: entering Petra via its hidden back routes, walking the ancient Siq until you emerge in front of the astonishing Treasury (Al-Khazneh). The reveal is powerful, atmospheric and often emotional. A spectacular reward for your 5 days on the trail.

Activity
Trekking distance: approx. 21.3 km
Trekking time: approx. 7 – 8 hours

Included
Accommodation: Homestay (twin-share)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 8

Petra to Little Petra, Safi Kitchen & Dead Sea Overnight

Your final day of trekking begins with an unforgettable walk back into Petra, entering through the narrow, winding Siq just as ancient traders once did. As the gorge opens, the iconic Treasury (Al-Khazneh) rises before you — an awe-inspiring moment that never fails to take your breath away. Here you’ll have time to soak it all in and learn about its ancient past.

You’ll explore deeper into the heart of Petra, passing rock-cut tombs, facades and remnants of Nabataean streets before climbing steadily through the highlands. The trail leads you to the magnificent Monastery (Ad-Deir), a soaring 47-metre-high masterpiece carved into the mountainside. Its viewpoints offer sweeping panoramas across Petra’s rugged desert landscape.

Your journey continues along Petra’s quiet back trails, far from the busier routes. Following ancient pathways lined with cisterns, caves and desert vistas, you emerge at Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) — a hidden gem once used as a Silk Road caravan stop. Its narrow gorge, carved stairways and rare painted dining room offer a glimpse into Nabataean life at its most authentic.

After the hike, you’ll travel to Safi Kitchen, a remarkable community initiative in the southern Dead Sea region. Here, local women welcome you into their world, sharing traditional dishes made from fresh, seasonal ingredients — recipes passed down through generations. It’s a beautiful exchange of culture, hospitality and shared stories.

As the day winds down, you’ll make your way to your Dead Sea hotel for a well-earned rest and relaxing dip. Settle in, unwind and soak in the stillness of this iconic landscape.

Activity
Trekking distance: approx. 14–16 km
Trekking time: approx. 5 – 6 hours

Included
Accommodation: Grand East Hotel Resort & Spa (twin-share)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9

Your Jordan adventure draws to a close today. After breakfast, you’ll transfer from your Dead Sea hotel to Queen Alia International Airport at the designated time for your group flight. As you make your way across the desert landscapes one last time, you leave with a richer understanding of Jordan’s history, culture and vast wilderness — and memories that will stay with you long after you return home.

Included
Transfer: Hotel to Queen Alia International Airport (designated group flight time)
Meals: Breakfast only

Why go

Trekking through Petra and Wadi Rum is far more than exploring sandstone canyons and ancient cities — it’s a journey that supports Jordan’s communities, protects fragile desert landscapes and connects you with the people who live along these historic routes.

Following a spectacular section of the 650km Jordan Trail, you walk ancient caravan paths once used by Nabataeans, Romans and Bedouin traders. Your presence helps sustain rural livelihoods, from Bedouin guides and camp teams in Wadi Rum to the community-run Safi Kitchen, where your visit directly supports local women through storytelling, hospitality and traditional cooking.

Your entry to Petra contributes to the preservation of this iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site, helping protect archaeological heritage and maintain trail systems for future generations.

By travelling with Adventurous Ewe, you help keep your impact low and your contribution meaningful. We operate in small groups, provide every trekker with a Water-to-Go bottle to reduce single-use plastic in Jordan, and work hand-in-hand with our Jordanian partners — who, like us, are certified Travelife Partners for their commitment to responsible, community-led tourism.

This is adventure with purpose: walking ancient desert routes, supporting those who protect them and experiencing Petra and Wadi Rum in the most authentic, sustainable way.

Visa

Many countries require a visa, and obtaining the correct visa for your trip — including any countries you may transit through — is your responsibility. We recommend checking your visa requirements as soon as you book. This ensures you have enough time to prepare documents and for your application to be processed.

Visa

You can buy a single-entry visit visa when you arrive at a Jordanian airport or the Sheikh Hussein/North Border land crossing. It costs 40 Jordanian dinars and is valid for one month. Some airlines may ask you to submit a health declaration at check-in. Check with your airline.

With visiting Jordan for tourism, and you will stay at least 3 nights in Jordan, you can apply for a Jordan Pass online before you arrive. Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a vital part of your Petra & Wadi Rum Trek — and it is compulsory for all participants. Your policy must provide comprehensive cover for:

  • The full value of your trip

  • Medical expenses (including emergency evacuation and repatriation)

  • All activities undertaken on this trek

  • Personal liability

  • Trip cancellation and curtailment

  • Loss of luggage, valuables and personal belongings

  • Travel and flight delays

  • Pandemic-related travel disruptions

Jordan’s landscapes are remote and rugged, and access to medical facilities can be limited outside major cities, so having the right cover in place is essential for your safety and peace of mind.

For UK residents, we partner with Campbell Irvine Direct, a specialist travel insurance broker offering policies that meet the requirements of our adventure travel itineraries. If you’d like a quote, you can do so here.

Important

We strongly recommend arranging suitable travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. This ensures you’re protected immediately should you need to cancel for an insured reason before departure.

Trekking with certified local guides ensures tourism income stays within Jordan’s communities, supporting sustainable, community-led tourism.

For groups of 10 or more, an Adventurous Ewe Leader will accompany the trip alongside our local team. All our Leaders are first-aid trained, experienced in multi-day trekking and chosen for their professionalism, care and sense of fun. They’ll work closely with our Bedouin crew to ensure everything runs smoothly — from logistics to morale on the trail.

Both your Adventurous Ewe Leader (if applicable) and Bedouin Hiking Guide remain in contact with our trusted local operator and Adventurous Ewe HQ throughout the journey, so you’re always in safe, well-supported and well-connected hands.

Group size

We proudly specialise in small group adventures — not only to create a more personal and enjoyable experience, but also to minimise environmental impact, enhance safety and encourage meaningful connection with the landscapes and communities you encounter along the Jordan Trail.

The Petra & Wadi Rum Trek operates with a minimum group size of 2 and a maximum of 14. This keeps the group close-knit, allows for excellent guide-to-trekker ratios and ensures you have the space, support and time to fully appreciate Jordan’s remarkable desert and archaeological landscapes.

You’re very welcome to join as a solo traveller, with friends or family, or even as part of a charity fundraising challenge — many of our adventurers choose to trek for causes close to their hearts.

If you have a group of 6 or more, we can organise a private departure tailored specifically for your charity, organisation or team. Whether it’s a particular date, focus or pace, we can shape the journey to suit your goals.

Trip grading

This trek is graded Moderate. It’s an active adventure suited to travellers with a good general level of fitness who are comfortable hiking for several hours a day over varied desert terrain.

What to Expect

  • You’ll trek 5 – 9 hours a day, often on uneven ground, soft sand and rocky trails.

  • Some days include steep ascents & descents and narrow ledges. While these are manageable for most trekkers, those with a strong fear of heights may find certain areas challenging.

  • The longest day of trekking is approximately 26.5kms in distance.
  • Your expert Bedouin guide will be on hand to support you throughout.

  • Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential, as long as you feel confident in your physical condition.

Desert Living

While hotels are used at the start and end of the trip, the desert camping nights are basic — no permanent toilets or showers — and part of the authentic Wadi Rum experience. Winter temperatures can be cold, sometimes dropping to freezing, while summer heat can be intense. Being properly equipped and staying hydrated is essential.

What You’ll Carry

You only need to hike with a light daypack carrying water, snacks and personal items. Your main luggage is transported for you by 4×4 support vehicles.

If you’re ready for a rewarding desert journey with breathtaking landscapes, cultural insight and achievable daily distances, this trek offers the perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment.

Please come prepared for trekking in the heat as temperatures will be very warm during the day and can reach up to 32ºC, however the evenings in camp will be quite cool.

Training

The Petra & Wadi Rum Trek is graded Moderate, and good preparation will make the experience far more enjoyable. With consecutive trekking days, varied desert terrain, soft sand, rocky sections and some short scrambles, steep ascents & descents, you’ll need solid fitness, good balance and confidence walking for several hours at a time.

You don’t need to be an elite athlete — but you should feel comfortable completing full-day hikes with a daypack, tackling uneven ground, managing heat or cooler desert nights, and embracing life outdoors.

What to Focus On

Endurance walking
Regular hikes of 4–7 hours on hilly or uneven trails are the best preparation. Back-to-back days mimic the rhythm of a multi-day desert trek.

Leg & core strength
Strengthen your lower body and core with step-ups, lunges, squats and uphill hikes. These build stability for sand, rock and desert ascents.

Cardiovascular fitness
Incorporate running, cycling, swimming or fast-paced hiking to build stamina. Good cardio helps you stay energised in warm, dry desert conditions.

Carrying weight
Train with a 20–30 litre daypack (5–7 kg) to replicate what you’ll carry: water, layers, snacks and essentials.

Terrain confidence
Practice on mixed terrain — sand, rocky paths, loose ground and uneven steps. These conditions closely reflect Wadi Rum and Petra’s desert trails.

Heat & cold management
Training in varied weather builds resilience. Jordan can be hot during the day and cold at night, so flexibility and layering are key.

Mental resilience
Desert camping is simple, remote and profoundly rewarding — but basic. A positive mindset, adaptability and team spirit make all the difference.

Training Support from Us

To help you prepare, you’ll receive a comprehensive Training Guide once you book — packed with practical tips, exercises, weekly plans and advice tailored to a multi-day desert trekking adventure.

The more prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy the journey — and everything it brings along the way.

Our motto:
Train hard, smile harder, and enjoy the journey.

Kit

Having the right kit is essential for a safe, comfortable and enjoyable Petra & Wadi Rum Trek. You’ll be walking through soft sand, rocky canyons, open desert plains and ancient archaeological sites — with warm, dry days and cooler nights, especially in winter. A simple but well-thought-out layering system, reliable footwear and sun protection will make a big difference to your comfort on the trail.

Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a comprehensive Petra & Wadi Rum Kit List with everything you need for desert trekking, Bedouin camp nights and varied weather conditions. Below is an overview to help you start planning.

Summer in Jordan can be extremely hot, especially in desert regions where daytime temperatures can be intense. Trekking is still possible, but it is more demanding and requires excellent hydration, sun protection and heat management.

Winter (November–March)

Winter brings cold nights, and temperatures in Wadi Rum can drop to freezing or below. Snowfall is possible in some regions, including the highlands around Petra. Thermals and warm layers are essential for comfort.

Packing Considerations

  • Bring layers suitable for both heat and cold

  • Thermals are recommended for winter departures

  • Sun protection is vital year-round

  • Desert nights can be significantly colder than daytime temperatures

Ramadan

Ramadan is expected to run from 16 February to 18 March 2026, followed by the Eid ul-Fitr festival.

During Ramadan:

  • Many restaurants and shops operate with reduced hours

  • Alcohol is not served during daylight

  • Some tourist sites may adjust opening times

Despite some minor inconveniences, travelling during Ramadan offers a unique opportunity to witness a deeply meaningful cultural period — especially the nightly celebrations when the fast is broken.

During Eid ul-Fitr, many government offices and businesses close for several days, and some site opening times may change.

Accommodation

Your journey through Jordan blends boutique hotels, authentic homestays and nights under extraordinary desert skies. This mix of comfort and simplicity reflects the landscapes you’ll travel through — from Bedouin heartlands to the hidden valleys leading into Petra.

Accommodation Overview

  • Permanent Camp: 1 night

  • Desert Wild Camp: 4 nights

  • Hotels: 2 nights

  • Local Homestay: 1 night

The accommodation listed in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline only. Occasionally, alternative arrangements may be required due to availability. In such cases, we’ll use accommodation of a similar style and standard.

Accommodation Style

Standards in the Middle East can differ from Western expectations. Hotels are clean, comfortable and welcoming, though you may occasionally notice small maintenance quirks. If anything arises, please let your Leader know so we can politely follow up with our hosts.

Many hotels and restaurants do not serve alcohol for religious or local legal reasons. Breakfast is included in the majority of overnight stays; please refer to the detailed itinerary for specific meal inclusions.

Accommodation is provided on a twin-share or multi-share basis. If you are travelling solo, you’ll be paired with another trekker of the same gender unless a single supplement is available and purchased.

Where You’ll Stay, depending on availability

Night 2 – Wadi Rum

Permanent Camp | Twin-share | Half Board
Set beneath towering sandstone cliffs, this fixed desert camp offers a magical first night in Wadi Rum.

Nights 3–6 – Wadi Rum
Wild Desert Camps
Twin-share tents | Half Board

Night 7 – Petra
Local Homestay
Standard Room | Bed & Breakfast
A warm, community-based stay offering insight into everyday life near Petra.

Night 8 – Dead Sea
Grand East Hotel – Resort & Spa (4★)
Standard Room | Half Board
Your final night brings comfort and calm overlooking the Dead Sea. A perfect place to relax and reflect on your journey.

Accommodation in Petra is limited and demands on the infrastructure are high; this creates occasional problems with hot water and plumbing for all hotels.  In general, the hotels in Petra are of an older style and more basic in comparison with the rest of Jordan.

Single room supplements are available for this trip for the hotel stays however we are unable to guarantee availability. Please enquire at the time of booking for details and up-to-date prices.

Traditional Bedouin tents will be set up at your campsite and smaller tents are provided for sleeping. Each campsite will be set up prior to your arrival. Whilst camping please be aware that although some campsites may have plumbed toilets and running water, there are no showers and facilities are basic, however this is part of the experience and a great opportunity to switch off from the digital world. The campsites also provide you with the chance to immerse yourself in the Bedouin culture and lifestyle.

Food & drink

Food

Good food is a memorable part of any Jordan adventure, and this trek blends traditional Bedouin flavours with hearty camp meals and hotel buffets — all designed to fuel your days on the trail.

Meals included:

  • 7 breakfasts

  • 6 lunches (Days 2–8), including a community lunch experience at Safi Kitchen on Day 8

  • Daily dinner, except Day 7 (when you’ll buy your own dinner locally – allow approx $15-$20pp)

Breakfast

Each morning starts with a buffet-style breakfast typical of 3-star hotels worldwide — think breads, eggs, fruit, yoghurt, spreads and tea/coffee. Simple, reliable fuel before heading out into the desert. Breakfasts on trek typically consists of bread, a variety of cheese, honey, jams, yoghurt, fruit, tea and Nescafe.

Lunch

Lunches vary depending on the day:

  • Packed lunches during the trek

  • Buffet-style meals in local hotels or restaurants

Where lunch isn’t included, expect to pay around USD $10 per person.

Day 8 is a highlight: you’ll share a traditional meal at Safi Kitchen, a community-led initiative run by local women, celebrating Jordanian cuisine and culture through food, storytelling and warm hospitality.

Dinner

Most dinners are provided at your desert camps and hotels, with the exception of Day 7. When dinner isn’t included, you’ll eat locally for approximately USD $15–20 per person, with your guide recommending the best nearby options.

Dinner in the Bedouin camps is a cultural experience in its own right. On Day 2, you’ll enjoy traditional dishes such as:

  • Magloobah – rice with vegetables and spiced chicken

  • Mansaf – rice served with lamb and tangy yoghurt sauce

  • Hoummus, mtabbal (aubergine dip) and fresh salads

In Wadi Rum, you’ll experience the famous zarb — a Bedouin feast cooked underground for several hours, producing tender meats, fragrant rice and richly flavoured vegetables, served with a spread of local side dishes.

Dietary Requirements

Vegetarian, vegan and special dietary requirements can be catered for — simply let us know at the time of booking. Options may be limited in remote areas.

Snacks for the trail

We recommend bringing a few favourite snacks from home (remove unnecessary packaging before you travel to help reduce waste).

Water

Staying hydrated is essential in Jordan’s desert climate, but it’s important to do so safely and responsibly. Tap water is not safe to drink, so all water you consume must be treated or filtered.

While trekking, your local crew will provide safe drinking water for you to refill your bottles. This will either be boiled or filtered, ensuring it’s safe throughout your journey. When you’re in towns or travelling between locations, you’ll need to treat water yourself using purification tablets or a reputable filter system.

To help reduce plastic waste and support responsible travel, we strongly discourage buying single-use plastic bottles. As part of your trek, you’ll receive a complimentary Water-to-Go bottle (or a new filter if you’re returning), giving you a reliable, environmentally friendly way to stay hydrated from start to finish.

If you need guidance on purification tablets or the Water-to-Go system, just let us know — we’re here to help you prepare.

Your Petra & Wadi Rum Trek has been carefully designed to support local communities, celebrate Bedouin culture, and protect Jordan’s fragile desert landscapes — ensuring that the people and places you encounter benefit directly from your journey.

Our responsible travel in action

  • You trek with experienced Bedouin guides and local support teams, ensuring tourism income stays within the community and helps sustain traditional desert livelihoods
  • Accommodation is arranged in Bedouin-style desert camps and locally owned hotels, supporting small family-run businesses across Wadi Rum, Petra and the Dead Sea region
  • Meals feature locally sourced produce and traditional recipes, including your community-led lunch at Safi Kitchen, which supports women-led initiatives in the southern Dead Sea area
  • Every trekker receives a complimentary Water-to-Go bottle (or new filter for returning trekkers) to reduce single-use plastic across the desert and along the Jordan Trail
  • We operate with a Leave No Trace ethos, managing waste responsibly, conserving limited desert water resources and respecting fragile ecosystems shaped over millennia
  • Cultural respect is woven into the journey, from engaging with Bedouin customs and hospitality to learning the significance of ancient caravan routes and sacred sites along the Jordan Trail
  • A portion of every booking supports Cool Earth, our long-term environmental charity partner working to protect rainforest communities globally.

Your role as a responsible traveller

  • Leave no trace: Carry all rubbish with you and dispose of it responsibly.
  • Reduce plastic waste: Use your Water-to-Go bottle and avoid single-use items on trek.
  • Travel light: Remove excess packaging before travel and minimise unnecessary gear.
  • Respect local culture: Dress modestly, ask permission before taking photos and engage with curiosity and sensitivity.
  • Protect heritage sites: Avoid touching carvings, stay on marked paths and follow guidance from your local guide while exploring Petra and its surrounding valleys.
