The Rwanda Cycling Adventure is graded as Tough and is designed for experienced cyclists with a good level of fitness and stamina. Rwanda isn’t called the “land of a thousand hills” for nothing – there are plenty of climbs and undulating terrain throughout the journey. While daily distances and gradients aren’t extreme, consistent ascents and off-road riding make this a physically demanding adventure.
To get the most from your trip, we recommend preparing in advance and gaining confidence on dirt roads and single-track trails. That said, E-bikes are available to hire if you’d like an extra boost on the climbs.
Vehicle support is available on all cycling days, although it may be limited in more remote areas. This is a team adventure, not a race – a challenging and rewarding ride that offers incredible insight into Rwandan landscapes, culture, and everyday life.
To help you get the most out of your Rwanda Cycling Adventure, we’ll provide a bespoke training programme when you join the trip. This guide is packed with expert tips, training schedules, nutrition advice and gear recommendations to build your fitness, confidence and comfort on the bike.
We’ve also partnered with Peak Sports Coaching, who offer exclusive coaching packages tailored to your goals, experience and lifestyle. As an Adventurous Ewe participant, you’ll receive:
-
A free 30-minute consultation
-
Access to personalised training plans via TrainingPeaks
-
Guidance on fuelling, recovery and cycling technique
-
10% off bike-fit and pedal analysis services
The more prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy every hill, view and moment of this unforgettable journey.
Our motto?
Train hard, smile harder, and enjoy the journey!
Once you join the Rwanda Cycling Adventure, you’ll receive a detailed kit list and packing tips to help you prepare with confidence for your two-wheeled journey. The list includes essential cycling gear, recommended clothing, and personal items to ensure you’re fully equipped for the adventure ahead.
We’ve taken the guesswork out of what to bring – from padded shorts and hydration essentials to bike kit tips and sunscreen – so you can focus on the ride, not what’s in your bag.
Plus, you’ll get access to an exclusive Adventurous Ewe discount code for use at specialist outdoor retailers, helping you get the kit you need at a great price.
Rwanda’s climate is generally mild and pleasant, but varies depending on altitude and season. The driest months are typically June through October, with December to February also seeing relatively dry conditions. The rainy seasons fall in April and May, with lighter, more intermittent rainfall in November.
Temperatures vary by region:
-
In the south, expect 18°C–30°C (64°F–86°F)
-
In the north, particularly in the highlands, it’s cooler with temperatures ranging from 12°C–28°C (54°F–82°F)
Given the variation, we recommend packing for both warm days and cooler mountain mornings – layers are key!
During your Rwanda Cycling Adventure, you’ll stay in a hand-picked mix of comfortable guesthouses, eco-lodges, and locally owned hotels, each chosen to reflect the character of the region and provide a welcoming place to rest after each day’s ride. From charming city guesthouses in Kigali to rustic rainforest retreats in Nyungwe and lakeside lodges along Lake Kivu, your accommodation complements the journey – offering local hospitality, scenic settings, and a true sense of place.
Rooms are arranged on a share and save basis in twin rooms. If you’d prefer your own space, single rooms are available for an additional charge, subject to hotel or guesthouse availability. Please let us know at the time of booking if this is your preference.
During your Rwanda Cycling Adventure, breakfast and dinner are included each day together with some packed lunches. These are all designed to keep you fuelled, refreshed, and well-nourished for the journey ahead. You’ll enjoy a mix of local cuisine and international dishes, served in guesthouses, lodges, and restaurants along the route.
While meat dishes are commonly served at restaurants, all packed lunches and freshly prepared meals during adventure-style stays are made with tasty vegetarian ingredients, ensuring meals are fresh and healthy.
Please let us know at the time of booking if you have any dietary requirements, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them. If you have a severe food allergy, it’s essential you contact us before booking. Unfortunately, due to the nature of local food preparation, we cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment and therefore do not recommend this trip if your allergy could trigger a severe reaction.
Clean, safe drinking water is provided throughout the trip to keep you hydrated on and off the bike. We strongly encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottles or a hydration system like a CamelBak to refill each day.
Your Adventurous Ewe Water-to-Go bottle is ideal for this adventure – it helps reduce plastic waste and ensures you have access to safe drinking water wherever you are. Let’s keep things sustainable and stay well hydrated along the way!

By definition adventures require planning and adaptability in equal measure. Jim and Adventurous Ewe have exactly the right blend of planning, comms, app support, and walked alongside every step of the way before and during the trip. Never intrusive, always there with answers to questions, always showing openness to our requests to add items to the itinerary, delivering on the backup plans when life throws the unexpected. Highly recommend!

Everything you’d expect from a personalised Adventure Challenge company and more. They organised a team charity challenge to Africa for us and it was superb from first discussion to finish. The team were trustworthy, organised, knowledgeable and very experienced. This was a once on lifetime trip for us and a lot of fun thanks to Adventurous Ewe. I would most certainly use the company again for a similar trip. Thanks Jim!
