Overview
There are treks… and then there are journeys that stay with you for life.
This 12-day Andean adventure is for those who want more than a tick-list trip to Machu Picchu. It’s for those who want to earn it — step by breathless step — crossing high mountain passes, tracing ancient Inca paths, and waking beneath vast starlit skies in one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth.
We begin gently in Cusco, allowing time to acclimatise while exploring the beating heart of the Inca Empire. Then we head into the wild — to glacial lakes, towering peaks and remote camps framed by the mighty Salkantay (6,271m). The legendary Salkantay Trek leads us over a 5,100m pass before seamlessly joining the iconic Inca Trail.
From there, we follow stone staircases through cloud forest and forgotten archaeological sites to the Sun Gate, arriving at Machu Picchu at sunrise — just as the Incas intended.
Challenging? Absolutely.
Rewarding? Beyond words.
And when the walking boots finally come off,the Sacred Valley offers colour, culture and comfort — a chance to reflect on what you’ve achieved before returning home changed, strengthened and inspired.
If you’re ready for high altitude, big landscapes, cultural depth and a true sense of achievement — Peru is waiting.
Arriving at 3,400m above sea level, Cusco immediately makes its presence felt. The air is thinner, the light sharper, the mountains closer.
You’ll be met at the airport and transferred privately to your hotel, where the rest of the day is yours to rest, hydrate and acclimatise. Take a gentle stroll to the Plaza de Armas, sip coca tea, and allow yourself to slow down to Andean pace.
Today is about adjusting — physically and mentally — to the altitude and the adventure ahead.
Included:
Transfers: Airport transfer in private minibus
Accommodation: 3-Star hotel in Cusco (twin share basis)
Meals: None
Today we gently acclimatise to the altitude as we begin to uncover the story of the Inca Empire.
Our private guided tour starts high above the city at Sacsayhuamán, where vast stones — some weighing over 100 tonnes — fit together with astonishing precision. From here we visit the enigmatic sanctuary of Qenqo and the water temple of Tambomachay, where intricate Inca hydraulic engineering still flows.
Back in the city, we explore Koricancha — once the most sacred temple in the Inca world — before stepping into the Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas, where indigenous symbolism quietly blends with colonial architecture.
It’s a fascinating immersion into Peru’s layered history — and the perfect cultural prelude before we head into the mountains.
Included:
Accommodation: 3-Star hotel in Cusco (twin share basis)
Meals: Breakfast
An early start signals the true beginning of our mountain journey. Leaving Cusco before dawn, we transfer through quiet Andean villages and shifting landscapes. After a stop at the colourful Andean village of Mollepata, where you can purchase snacks for your trek, we’ll continue to the start of the trail where we meet our mules, muleteers, and cooks.
You’ll then enjoy a hearty breakfast prepared by our mountain team, before we shoulder our daypacks and begin walking. The trail climbs steadily towards Humantay Lake, one of Peru’s most striking glacial lagoons. As we crest he final rise, the water appears — an almost surreal turquoise set against the ice-covered flanks of Humantay Mountain.
Our first remote campsite is Soraypampa, beneath the imposing bulk of Salkantay (6,271m). Tents are pitched, hot drinks are served and a freshly prepared dinner awaits as the light fades from the peaks. The temperature drops quickly after sunset — but the Milky Way blazing overhead more than compensates. This is when the adventure becomes real.
Hiking Time: 6 – 7 hours
Hiking Distance: 12 km / 7.45 mi
Lowest Point: 3,350 m / 10,990 ft
Highest Point :4,600 m / 15,097 ft

Accommodation: Camping (shared two-man tents)
Meals: Breakfast, lunch dinner
Today we properly enter the high Andes. The trail rises gradually through glacial valleys, Salkantay dominating the horizon — its snowfields gleaming against deep blue skies. Llamas graze quietly in the distance and condors occasionally circle above.
The climb is steady rather than rushed; this is about rhythm and acclimatisation. We pause regularly, not only to catch our breath but to absorb the scale of the Vilcabamba range. Lunch is served high on the mountainside by our remarkable support team — proof that comfort and wilderness can coexist.
The final stretch to Pampa Japonesa feels wonderfully remote. Lagoons shimmer below us and the campsite sits in a vast amphitheatre of rock and ice. There are no roads here. No buildings. Just mountain silence.
The air is thinner. The views are vast. You’ll sleep deeply tonight.

Today is the test. We rise before sunrise and begin the climb towards Incachiriasca Pass, the highest point of the Salkantay section at 5,100m. The gradient steepens and the air thins noticeably. Progress becomes deliberate: slow steps, steady breathing, quiet determination.
Reaching the pass is an emotional moment. Prayer flags flutter in the wind. Snow-capped peaks stretch in every direction. The scale is raw, immense and humbling.
After celebrating the achievement, we descend gradually into a different world. The terrain soft ens, valleys widen and hardy alpine wildlife appears — including the elusive vizcacha, a rabbit like Andean rodent perched on rocky outcrops.
Our camp near Sisaypampa, beside an ancient Inca aqueduct, feels almost sheltered after the vastness of the pass. The sense of accomplishment tonight is palpable.

The morning begins with a steep descent to the lesser-known Inca ruins of Inkaracay (Paucarcancha). Here, with far fewer visitors than the classic route, we explore agricultural terraces and stone structures that once supported travellers heading toward Machu Picchu.
Continuing downhill to Huayllabamba, we officially join the classic Inca Trail. Passports are checked; history feels closer. From this point on your luggage will be carried by porters, as mules and pack-animals are not permitted on the Inca Trail; here we meet the porters who will accompany us to Machu Picchu — an extraordinary team whose strength and good humour are legendary.
The afternoon brings a steady climb to Ayapata Camp, our base before tackling the highest point of the Inca Trail. The vegetation begins to change, hinting at the diverse ecosystems still to come.
Hiking Time :7-8 hours.
Hiking Distance: 15 km / 9.32 mi

Today’s challenge is iconic: Abra de Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass.
The climb is sustained and at altitude it demands patience. We move as a team — slow, steady, supportive. The reward at 4,200m is immense: sweeping mountain views and the profound satisfaction of standing atop the highest point of the Inca Trail.
The descent into Pacaymayu Valley is steep but beautiful, filled with birdlife and native flora. After lunch, we climb again to Runkurakay Pass (4,000m) before descending to Chaquicocha Camp.
It’s a long, demanding day — but one that builds resilience and camaraderie in equal measure.
You’ll go to bed with tired legs and soaring spirits.
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours.

The character of the trail shifts today. The gradients soften and the scenery becomes more intricate. Stone staircases wind through cloud forest , orchids cling to moss-covered trees and hummingbirds dart between blossoms.
We explore Phuyupatamarca — “The City Above the Clouds” — perched dramatically above the valley. Its water channels still run, testament to Inca engineering brilliance.
Further along, we pass the agricultural terraces of Intipata before reaching our final campsite at Wiñay Wayna. This archaeological complex, cascading down a mountainside, is one of the most beautiful along the route. Ten ceremonial baths suggest purification rituals for those nearing Machu Picchu.
There’s a quiet anticipation tonight. Tomorrow, we arrive.
Hiking Time: ~5 hours.

Before first light, we begin the final push towards Inti Punku — the Sun Gate.
As dawn breaks, Machu Picchu slowly reveals itself below, framed by Huayna Picchu and bathed in golden light. After days of effort, the moment feels deeply personal — a powerful blend of history, landscape and achievement.
We descend into the citadel for a comprehensive guided exploration, learning about its temples, terraces and enduring mysteries, with time afterwards to wander independently.
By afternoon, we descend to Aguas Calientes and return to Cusco — tired but elated.

Accommodation: 3-Star hotel in Cusco (twin share basis)

Now we slow the pace. After the intensity of the trek, today offers cultural immersion at a gentler pace.
We descend into the fertile Sacred Valley of the Incas, following the Urubamba River. In Pisac, vibrant markets showcase colourful textiles, ceramics and silverwork — living traditions passed through generations.
We explore the impressive hilltop ruins of Pisac before continuing to Ollantaytambo, one of the finest surviving examples of Inca urban planning. Massive stone blocks form the Temple of the Sun, while original water channels still run through the village streets.
Our final stop is Chinchero, where colonial and Inca histories intertwine against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. Here, traditional weaving techniques are still practiced, and Andean dress remains part of daily life.
It’s a fitting cultural counterpoint to the mountain challenge — grounding the journey in living heritage, not just ancient ruins.

Trekking experience and trek grading – ‘Tough’
This is a strenuous trek in a remote area of South America. It is graded ‘Tough’ due to the warm conditions and high-altitude trekking. The trip is designed for confident trekkers who are looking for a challenging yet rewarding mountain ascent. Although this trek is not technically difficult, you should be an experienced walker as trails can be very stony. Most routes follow established trails but there are some rough paths that involve walking on scree. All trekking days include full porterage and you should be prepared for long days with some boulders and steep sections (maximum 8-9 hours).
As with any trek in mountainous/high altitude areas, safety is paramount and your leader will always make decisions to amend the itineraries to ensure the safety of the whole group.
This trip includes one or more overnight stays over 2500 metres/11500ft, where there is a genuine risk of being affected by Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). If left untreated AMS can be life-threatening. We would expect the majority of the team to notice the effects of being at high altitude, and while most will only feel discomfort and headaches, it is not uncommon for a small number of people to need extra care which will be provided by our leaders and local crew.
During your pre-trek briefing, altitude sickness will be discussed in more detail along with advice on how to best cope with it. The most important thing is not to fear it, but to respect it. Know the signs & symptoms of AMS, be aware of how it affects the body and report any illness to your leader straight away. Our leaders and crew are there to help and are fully experienced with high altitude conditions and all the scenarios that trekking at these altitudes bring. You’re in good hands.
The best way to adjust to altitude is to walk slowly, rest as often as possible and drink plenty of water! Rest assured your Leader is experienced in high altitude trekking and will advise you accordingly if you are starting to feel the effects of altitude.
The weather on the Salkantany and Inca Trail varies; October is generally at the end of the dry season. Temperature-wise, the maximum daytime temperature is fairly consistent at ~20-22oC year-round but overnight temperatures are much lower, particularly at higher altitudes.
Hotel (twin share rooms) and camping (shared 2 person tents)
We’ve sourced our accommodation very carefully in Cusco and picked a locally owned hotel in line with the Adventurous Ewe style of travel, but please note that service and accommodation in Peru may be different to western standards. The rooms are on a twin share basis.
Whilst on the trek you’ll be camping. We use high quality mountain tents which are of expedition quality. If you are travelling by yourself, you will be paired up with another single member of the team of the same sex. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and mat, although you can hire these items if you prefer. We have a dining tent with a table and chairs for meal times, along with portable toilets and toilet tents. The crew will set up and pack down all tents so you will be looked after very well.

Severe allergies
If you have a severe allergy please inform us at the time of booking. We will do all we can to help, but unfortunately we are unable to guarantee an allergy free environment on this trip. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as ‘adrenaline auto-injectors’ are not carried as standard by AE leaders and crew. Whilst your leader is aware of our trekkers medical history, please also inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.
Drinking Water
It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. Boiled water is also provided by the trek crew. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.
Adventurous Ewe has partnered with Water-to-Go, a filtration system that eliminates over 99.99% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source – for more info please click here.
