Overview

Tucked deep in the Greater Caucasus, Georgia’s Upper Svaneti is a region defined by its soaring peaks, medieval watchtowers, and centuries-old traditions that have thrived in isolation. This remote corner of the Caucasus remains one of Europe’s most captivating mountain landscapes – where every valley tells a story and every village feels like a step back in time.

Over 8 days, this point-to-point trek follows part of the pioneering Transcaucasian Trail, a new long-distance route linking the Greater and Lesser Caucasus Mountains. You’ll trek through forested valleys and flower-filled meadows, ascend alpine ridges, and cross three dramatic mountain passes – Ughviri Pass (2,480m), Chkhutnieri Pass (2,730m) and Gorvashi Pass (2,710m) – with panoramic views of the mighty peaks of Tetnuldi (4,800m), Ushba (4,700m) and Shkhara (5,201m).

Each day ends in a different highland village, where you’ll stay in simple family-run guesthouses and experience warm Svan hospitality, hearty mountain food, and a way of life that remains deeply connected to the land. The route winds from Mestia through Mulakhi, Adishi and Iprari, before reaching Ushguli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Europe’s highest inhabited village, shaped by centuries of isolation and close-knit community life.

Your journey concludes in Tbilisi, Georgia’s lively capital, where winding alleys, colourful balconies, ancient churches and café culture create a perfect blend of old and new. It’s also home to Georgia’s proud winemaking heritage – the ideal way to toast your journey through this wild and welcoming mountain region.

This is more than a trek – it’s a journey through timeless traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and the enduring spirit of the Caucasus.

Day 1

Arrival and Explore Tbilisi

Your adventure begins in Georgia’s vibrant capital, Tbilisi.

Fly directly from the UK to Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) for the start of your Svaneti Highlands Trek. Flights are not included, giving you the flexibility to travel from your nearest airport, use frequent flyer points, or extend your stay in Georgia if you wish. Once booked, we’ll provide the recommended flights that coincide with the included group airport transfer.

On arrival, you’ll be met by your local team and transferred to your hotel in Tbilisi. Store your bags and head out to explore this captivating city – where old meets new in a blend of culture, colour and charm. Wander through the old districts of Tbilisi, built like terraces into the hillsides, and stroll along narrow streets lined with colourful houses and ornate balconies.

You’ll visit the 13th-century Metekhi Church, offering panoramic views over the old town, before taking a cable car ride to the ancient Narikala Fortress (4th century) for sweeping views across the city. From here, descend into the historic sulphur bath district, whose domed bathhouses have given Tbilisi its name and long been a centre of local life. Return to the hotel in the afternoon where you can rest and freshen up ahead of dinner at a local restaurant. Your first taste of Georgia’s famous cuisine and hospitality.

Included:

  • Airport transfer from Tbilisi International Airport (TBS) to your hotel (one designated transfer time provided)

  • Hotel accommodation (twin-share basis)

  • Dinner in a local restaurant

Day 2

Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Uplistsikhe – Gori – Kutaisi

Today, you’ll journey west from Tbilisi, uncovering some of Georgia’s most important historical and cultural landmarks.

The day begins with a visit to Mtskheta, the ancient capital and spiritual heart of Georgia. Explore its two UNESCO World Heritage sites – the 6th-century Jvari Monastery, perched high above the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari Rivers, and the 11th-century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of Georgia’s most revered churches and a masterpiece of early medieval architecture.

Continue to Gori, the heart of the Kartli region, where you’ll visit the Stalin Museum, dedicated to one of the most controversial figures of the 20th century who was born here.

Your journey then takes you further back in time to Uplistsikhe Cave Town (1st millennium BC) – an extraordinary archaeological site carved into sandstone cliffs. Once a major trading hub along the Silk Road, Uplistsikhe features ancient cave dwellings, temples, a theatre, and even a wine cellar, offering a fascinating glimpse into Georgia’s distant past.

After exploring this ancient city, continue west to Kutaisi, Georgia’s second-largest city, where you’ll spend the night.

Included:

  • Hotel accommodation in Kutaisi (twin-share basis)

  • Breakfast only

Day 3

Kutaisi – Martvili Canyon – Mestia

After breakfast, leave Kutaisi and travel northwest towards the lush region of Samegrelo, where the landscape begins to rise towards the high Caucasus Mountains.

Your first stop is the stunning Martvili Canyon, a natural wonder carved by turquoise-blue waters over millennia. Here, you’ll have the chance to take a short boat ride through the canyon, gliding between steep limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls – an unforgettable introduction to western Georgia’s beauty.

After exploring the canyon, continue your scenic drive deeper into the mountains towards Mestia, the gateway to Upper Svaneti. As you ascend through dramatic valleys and winding roads, the scenery shifts to alpine meadows, forested slopes and the watchtowers that have guarded Svaneti’s villages for centuries.

Arrive in Mestia by late afternoon, where you’ll settle into your family-run hotel, enjoy a warm welcome dinner, and prepare for the start of your trekking adventure tomorrow.

After several hours on the trail, the picturesque village of Mulakhi comes into view – a timeless settlement nestled among rolling hills and alpine fields.

Trip grading

The Svaneti Highlands Trek is graded as Tough. This is a multi-day mountain trek involving long days on varied terrain, with sustained ascents and descents and some steep, uneven sections at altitude.

You’ll be trekking for consecutive days, averaging 5- 7 hours per day, with altitude gains of up to 1,000m and reaching a maximum elevation of 2,730m at Chkhutnieri Pass. The route follows well-established trails through remote valleys and mountain passes, but paths can be rocky, muddy or slippery in parts – particularly after rain or snowmelt.

Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, adding an extra layer of challenge. You may experience warm sunshine one moment and cold winds or showers the next, so being prepared with the right kit and mindset is key.

A solid level of fitness, stamina and mental resilience is essential. You don’t need prior high-altitude trekking experience, but regular hill walking, endurance training and time outdoors in changeable weather will help you feel comfortable and confident on the trail.

Throughout the trek, your Local Mountain Guide (and Adventurous Ewe Leader for larger groups) will be there to support you – setting a steady pace, keeping morale high and ensuring plenty of rest and refuelling stops along the way.

This is a challenging but hugely rewarding journey through one of the most remote and awe-inspiring corners of the Caucasus – perfect for those ready to embrace the elements, curious about remote mountain life with a genuine spirit of adventure.

Altitude

The Svaneti Highlands Trek reaches a maximum altitude of 2,730 metres at Chkhutnieri Pass, with several other passes around 2,400–2,700 metres. While this is considered moderate altitude, it’s still high enough for some people to feel mild effects such as shortness of breath or fatigue, particularly during steep ascents.

The itinerary has been designed to allow your body to acclimatise gradually, gaining height steadily over several days. Daily treks involve regular breaks, plenty of hydration, and time to adjust to the thinner mountain air.

At these elevations, the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is low but not impossible. Our guides are trained to recognise the early signs and will monitor everyone’s well-being closely throughout the trek.

To prepare, we recommend building your aerobic fitness through hill walking, hiking or endurance training before departure. Staying well-hydrated, eating regularly and getting plenty of rest during the trek will also help you adapt more comfortably.

With good preparation, a steady pace and guidance from our experienced Local Mountain Guide, most trekkers find the altitude manageable and enjoy the incredible sense of achievement that comes with trekking among the high peaks of the Caucasus.

Training

The Svaneti Highlands Trek is rated as Tough, so a good level of fitness and preparation will make your experience far more rewarding. You’ll be trekking for several consecutive days, often on steep, uneven terrain with ascents and descents of up to 1,000 metres.

We recommend regular hill walking or hiking with a daypack, along with strength and cardio training in the months leading up to your departure. Building stamina, leg strength and endurance will help you feel comfortable and confident on the trail.

To support you, we’ll provide a comprehensive Training Guide once you book, packed with practical tips, exercises and a tailored training plan. The more prepared you are, the more you’ll enjoy the journey – and everything it brings along the way.

Our motto is: Train hard, smile harder and enjoy the journey!

Kit

Having the right kit is key to staying comfortable, safe and prepared for the changing conditions of the Svaneti Highlands Trek. You’ll be crossing varied terrain – from forest trails and alpine meadows to rocky passes – and weather in the Caucasus mountains can shift quickly from sunshine to rain, wind or cool evenings.

Once you’ve booked, you’ll receive a comprehensive Kit List tailored specifically for this trek, covering everything you’ll need from head to toe. It includes guidance on essential clothing layers, footwear, trekking gear and optional extras to make your experience more comfortable.

To reduce waste, you’ll receive a complimentary Adventurous Ewe Water-to-Go bottle (or a new filter if you’re a returning trekker), helping you stay hydrated while cutting down on single-use plastic bottles.

If you have any questions about your gear or need advice on what to bring, we’re always happy to help. We also offer exclusive discounts with UK outdoor retailers to help you get adventure-ready with quality kit at a fair price.

Weather

The weather in the Svaneti Highlands can be as varied and dramatic as the landscapes themselves. Expect everything from warm sunshine in the valleys to cool winds and occasional rain or even snow flurries on the higher passes.

The trekking season runs from June to September, when trails are clear of snow and the mountains burst into colour. In June and September, daytime temperatures in the valleys range from 10–20°C, dropping close to freezing at night. July and August tend to be warmer, with daytime highs around 20–25°C, though short afternoon showers are common.

Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, and it’s not unusual to experience several seasons in a single day. Waterproofs, warm layers, and good-quality trekking boots are essential to keep you comfortable and protected.

Whatever the weather brings, your Local Mountain Guide will monitor conditions closely and adjust plans if necessary – ensuring you can enjoy the journey safely while experiencing the ever-changing moods of the Caucasus.

Accommodation

Your Svaneti Highlands Trek includes 10 nights of accommodation, carefully chosen to balance comfort, character and authenticity – from boutique city stays to traditional mountain guesthouses.

In Tbilisi and Kutaisi, you’ll stay in comfortable 3-star hotels with twin-share, en-suite rooms – the perfect place to relax before and after your trek.

Facilities are basic but welcoming, often with shared bathrooms and limited hot water. Electricity and Wi-Fi may also be intermittent in some areas, adding to the sense of adventure and remoteness.

Single Travellers

Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation to help keep costs down and foster a friendly team atmosphere. Single travellers share with people of the same gender as on their passport, in rooms that range from twin to multi-share depending on the accommodation.

Single rooms may be organised for an additional cost, depending on availability in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Mestia. However, please note that single rooms are not available in the Svanetian villages due to the traditional, shared nature of the guesthouses.

Food & drinks

Food is a memorable highlight of any journey through Georgia – a country renowned for its warmth, hospitality and rich culinary traditions. All breakfasts, 6 lunches and 6 dinners are included during your Svaneti Highlands Trek, with an emphasis on fresh, locally sourced produce and hearty mountain meals.

Breakfasts are typically continental-style, featuring bread, jams, eggs, cheese, and tea or coffee. Packed lunches are provided during trekking days and usually include bread, cheese, meats, fresh vegetables, fruit and biscuits whereby you make these yourself. Evening meals in the mountain guesthouses are homemade, traditional Georgian dishes such as Khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), Khinkali (dumplings), Lobio (spiced bean stew), and hearty soups served with potatoes, rice or pasta. Expect plenty of cheese, vegetables, and the generous use of walnuts, herbs and spices.

For those with dietary requirements, vegetarians are catered for, as Georgia’s cuisine includes a wide variety of vegetable, dairy and bread-based dishes. Vegans and those with dairy or wheat intolerances will find more limited options but can still be accommodated with advance notice. Please note that walnuts are widely used in Georgian cooking, so travellers with nut allergies should take care to inform us at the time of booking.

Your Local Mountain Guide will advise when it’s safe to fill up your water bottles. To help reduce plastic waste, you’ll receive a complimentary Adventurous Ewe Water-to-Go bottle (or new filter for returning trekkers). We do not encourage the purchase of single-use plastic bottles. You are welcome to bring water purification tablets or your own filtration system if you wish.

Georgia also has one of the world’s oldest winemaking traditions – with evidence of viticulture dating back over 8,000 years and more than 500 indigenous grape varieties. During the trip, you’ll have the chance to enjoy Georgia’s famous hospitality with a glass of local wine or Chacha, the traditional grape spirit, to toast your time in the Caucasus.

Sustainable and Responsible Travel

At Adventurous Ewe, sustainability isn’t an add-on – it’s the foundation of everything we do. As a Travelife Partner, we’re proud to be recognised for our ongoing commitment to responsible travel and continuous improvement in sustainability across all our operations.

We’re dedicated to ensuring that our adventures positively impact the people, communities, and environments we’re privileged to explore. Our Svaneti Highlands Trek is designed to support local livelihoods, celebrate cultural heritage, and protect the fragile mountain ecosystems of the Caucasus.

Our responsible travel in action

  • We work directly with local Svan guides, drivers and guesthouse hosts, ensuring tourism income stays within the community.

  • By trekking village-to-village, we support multiple small family businesses across the region – from guesthouse owners to farmers, cooks and craftspeople.

  • Staying in locally owned guesthouses allows you to experience genuine Svan hospitality while helping sustain traditional ways of life.

  • We help reduce single-use plastic by providing every new trekker with a complimentary Water-to-Go bottle, and returning trekkers receive a new filter.

  • All meals are locally sourced and home-cooked, supporting small-scale food producers and reducing transport emissions.

  • We operate with a Leave No Trace ethos – respecting nature, conserving resources, and leaving each place as we found it.

  • A portion of every booking goes towards Cool Earth, our long-term environmental charity partner working to protect rainforests and empower local communities around the world.

Your role as a responsible traveller

  • Leave no trace: Take all rubbish with you and recycle where possible.

  • Reduce plastic waste: Use your Water-to-Go bottle and avoid single-use items.

  • Travel light: Remove excess packaging from new gear before you travel.

  • Respect local culture: Engage with warmth and curiosity – a simple smile or “madloba” (thank you in Georgian) goes a long way.

Together, we can help protect this extraordinary landscape – ensuring that the trails, towers and traditions of Svaneti continue to thrive for generations to come.
