Overview

This adventure captures Jordan’s desert landscapes at its best and culminates with getting off the beaten track in the famous ancient city of Petra.

Jordan has welcomed travellers for centuries from camel caravans to intrepid adventurers. With its World Heritage Sites, friendly people and awe-inspiring desert landscapes, this country is a trekkers paradise.

You’ll experience epic landscapes of weathered sandstone and reddened dunes, encompassed by a salt sea at the lowest point on earth. Trek past canyons flowing with seasonal water, oases of palm trees and explosions of springtime flowers scattered across arid hills. Your route winds its way along dramatic mountains, through spectacular wadi’s and vast ever-changing desert landscapes. You’ll enjoy delicious camp meals and a good night’s rest under a blanket of stars.

Finishing in Petra, the ancient Nabataean city framed by Jordan’s sandstone escarpments. Petra is the jewel in the crown of the country’s many antiquities. With sites flung over a vast rocky landscape and a mood that changes with the shifting light as the sun moves across the sky, this is a highlight that rewards you as a long distance trekker.

Plus there’s time to relax with an effortless dip in the Dead Sea or cool off in your hotel swimming pool before enjoying a delicious celebration meal on your last night in Jordan.

DAY 2

Private transfer from Amman – Mt Nebo – KerakShobak Castle – Mansura (overnight)

After breakfast you will be transferred in an air-conditioned minibus down to Mount Nebo. At 1,000m, this mountain is a very important Christian site for it was here, on the edge of a ridge overlooking the Dead Sea, that Moses first caught sight of the Holy Land, having led his people from Sinai. Mount Nebo offers fantastic views of the Jordan valley and the Dead Sea, with the West Bank city of Jericho  visible from the summit and Jerusalem apparent on very clear days.

Lunch will be in a local restaurant near the imposing Crusader castle of Kerak. This is the largest and best-preserved of the Crusader Castles in the region. It was built in 1132 by Baldwin of Jerusalem and sits on top of a steep outcrop, an almost impregnable position. It became famous at the time of the Crusades as one of the chain of fortresses used in the Holy War against Islam. From here you will continue your road journey south enjoying the fantastic views over magnificent Wadi Araba before briefly stretching your legs at Shobak Castle. You will then arrive at Mansura where your campsite awaits and dinner will be served.

Included
Transfer:  Private air conditioned vehicle transfer
Accommodation:  Bedouin camp
Meals: Breakfast and dinner

DAY 3

Trek Mansura – Wadi Gwair – Wadi Feynan

Today your trek will start along the impressive Shara mountains. The barren landscape then changes as you enter Wadi Gwair and wind your way through to emerge in the late afternoon in a broad valley. You will pass palms, reeds and oleander bushes that blossom in the spring. The Wadi Feinan gorge has an interesting archaeological landscape and was an area rich in prehistoric activity. Your route will take you past the remains of a late Roman citadel, copper mines, elaborate water systems and settlements with Neolithic houses, some even preserved to two storeys. The end of the day will see you trek into your campsite ready for a well deserved meal and a night camped under the stars.

Included
Accommodation: Bedouin camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

DAY 4

Trek Wadi Feynan – Hamada – Wadi Abu Sakakeen

Following breakfast in camp, your trek follows the outskirts of the Shara Mountains and through the Wadi Araba, which is like a small rocky desert called a Hamada with scattered Acacia trees. The views across the wadi, part of the Great Rift Valley, are an irresistible distraction, and looking back you will be in ore of the vast panoramic landscape which stretches for miles.

On reaching camp, there are several small hilltops to climb for an unforgettable sunset over the desert plains on which you are camping.

DAY 5

Trek Wadi Abu Sakakeen – Wadi FeithAglaGbour Whedat

Following breakfast in camp, today’s route takes you into Wadi Feith, a narrow canyon with its year round running stream. From here you will then venture down into Wadi Sahawa. The trail then heads up to your lunch spot at Tabqa Agla. After lunch you will take a Bedouin trail with beautiful views over Wadi Araba to Gabur Al Waheidat. Tonight’s camp is on a spectacular pass from which you can see the whole of the route we trekked so far giving you a huge sense of achievement.

Included
Accommodation:  Bedouin camp
Meals:  Breakfast, lunch & dinner

DAY 6

Trek Gabur Al WaheidatAlfarsh – El Maisra

Following breakfast in camp, you will hike down into a fertile green valley before ascending an exposed ridge-top. The climb is short but steep and the views from the top are jaw-dropping. You are an impressive kilometre above the desert plains below. After lunch your route descends down through a wild valley and past sandstone domes and cliffs to little Petra. This gives you your first taste of the amazing Nabataean culture. There’s time to visit the Neolithic village of al-Baidah and then enjoy afternoon tea made by your Bedouin crew.

The trail then makes it way along a gravel road winding its way through the sandstone domes to camp at El Maisra near little Petra. For many today has proven the most spectacular day. Tonight is your last night sleeping in the Bedouin tents or under the blanket of the night sky.

Included
Accommodation:  Bedouin camp
Meals:  Breakfast, lunch & dinner

DAY 7

Trek to Petra and free afternoon to explore

Following your last breakfast in the desert you will continue your trek to Petra. You will enter little Petra reserve and negotiate narrow paths clinging to the side of deep canyons. You will have a whole day to enjoy Petra including a halfway guided tour of the rose-red city which is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Petra was carved into the Sharah Mountains by the industrious Nabataeans, who grew rich through their control of the frankincense trade routes through Arabia. Petra fell into obscurity about a thousand years ago, while its existence and location, were kept a closely guarded secret by the local Bedouin, until 1812 when the Swiss explorer John Louis Burckhardt tricked his way into the site.

Your guided tour of this unique and unforgettable site starts with a walk through the Siq, the narrow and winding fissure between towering cliffs, which you will exit through a tiny cleft to be confronted by the awe-inspiring splendour of the Treasury monument, Petra’s most elaborate ruin, sculpted into the sandstone rock. Local legend has it that this tomb once stored the gifts of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon. You will continue to explore the royal tombs, a roman theatre and the colonnaded street to name but a few of the astounding attractions on view. Walking up the 800 steps you will be greeted with an amazing view of the vast and impressive Monastery (Ed Deir) and extending to more views over the whole area.

The afternoon is free for you to further explore one of the most impressive and exciting sites of ancient history anywhere in the world. One option is that you can walk up to the High Place (Attuf Ridge), once the venue for sacrificial offerings, which gives wonderful views over the Petra Basin and out towards Jebel Harun and Wadi Sabra.

Included
Accommodation: Hotel (twin share basis – share & save)
Meals: Breakfast

DAY 8

Private transfer from Petra – Dead Sea with free time

Leaving the desert and the ancient city of Petra behind, you will head to the Dead Sea which is one of the most fascinating places on earth.  Here you will have free time to experience the effortless floating in the sea or simply cooling off in the hotel swimming pool.  This evening there will be a group dinner to celebrate the completion of your epic desert trek in Jordan.

Included
Accommodation: Hotel (twin share basis – share & save)
Meals: Breakfast and celebration dinner

DAY 9

Private transfer to the airport for your return flight home

Following breakfast at your hotel you will bid farewell to the sea and transfer to the airport ready for your return flight to the UK. Filled with a huge sense of pride and achievement on completing your desert trek through Jordan you will arrive home with plenty of stories to tell, a greater understanding of the country and it’s people and new found friends.

Included

Supporting local tourism and local communities

Since the COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on local communities and livelihoods across the planet, we’re keen to promote adventures in countries that are actively working towards sustainable tourism and conservation projects. Jordan has shown both ingenuity and commitment for nearly two decades in embracing an environmentally friendly approach. This approach extends both to an assortment of environmental challenges and to tourism.

We’re passionate about exploring off the beaten track routes in order to help communities who are in the shadow of mainstream tourist destinations. We also aim to create an adventure which is about discovery, immersing yourself in fascinating environments, customs and cultures and provides an understanding of history and people.

Weather

The best period for trekking in Jordan is in the late autumn through to early spring season, from October through to mid April. Outside of this period it can be very hot, with temperatures, rising to 40°C in July and August. In October and in April, the maximum daytime temperature is likely to be in the high twenties or low thirties °C, falling as low as 10°C at night. Heading into November the temperatures begin to cool and by December/January, typical daytime maximum temperatures are around 12 – 15 °C falling as low as 5°C at night.

Ramadan 2021 and 2022

In 2021, the important month of Ramadan will be in progress from 12th April – 11th May and in 2022, from 2nd April – 1st May. Eid ul-Fitr festival will be held directly at its conclusion for 3 – 4 days.

Ramadan is a festival of sacrifice where the devout refrain from eating or drinking during daylight hours. During Ramadan, business hours are shortened, including opening hours at some tourist attractions. Alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours and many restaurants will be closed.

While you should expect some delays and inconveniences during this period, the month is a fantastic opportunity to travel in a Muslim country and witness this unique period, particularly the nightly celebrations when the sun sets and the fast is broken. Please note that although the Eid ul-Fitr festival can also be a fascinating time to travel it’s a period of national holiday. Most government offices and businesses will be closed and some tourist site opening hours may be affected.

Accommodation

Hotels (3 nights twin/triple share rooms) and desert camp (5 nights)

You will spend 3 nights in hotels. The hotels for Amman and Petra are 3-star hotels and for your final night at the Dead Sea you will stay in a 4-star hotel with a swimming pool. All rooms are on a twin share basis and have ensuite facilities. Some hotels have more facilities than others however it is always good to keep in mind that the star rating in Jordan is quite different to what you may expect at home.  Sometimes we may use less centrally located hotels in the interests of comfort.

Accommodation in Petra is limited and demands on the infrastructure are high; this creates occasional problems with hot water and plumbing for all hotels.  In general, the hotels in Petra are of an older style and more basic in comparison with the rest of Jordan.

Single room supplements are available for this trip for the hotel stays however we are unable to guarantee availability. Please enquire at the time of booking for details and up-to-date prices.

Traditional Bedouin tents will be set up at your campsite and smaller tents are provided for sleeping. You are also welcome to sleep out under the stars as well. Each campsite will be set up prior to your arrival. Whilst camping please be aware that although some campsites have plumbed toilets and running water, there are no showers and facilities are basic, however this is part of the experience and a great opportunity to switch off from the digital world. The campsites also provide you with the chance to immerse yourself in the Bedouin culture and lifestyle.

Food & drink

Food

The food provided is plentiful, often local in style and freshly-cooked, and will give you plenty of energy. Lunch will varying from a buffet-style lunch-stop to packed lunches. Dinners are generally eaten in camp or at the hotel, depending on accommodation. In some regions there may be less variety than you are used to, and in others fresh meat or produce can be harder to come by.

Any meals not included are listed in the itinerary and are generally on travel days or where there is access to local restaurants, giving you the opportunity to explore and try other culinary experiences and support local businesses! There is always something to suit different budgets.

Being vegetarian or having other dietary requirements is not usually a problem provided you let us know well in advance. Please do not expect as greater variety as you would have at home – at times you will be in very rural or remote areas and among people of a different culture who may not understand your requirements, however willing they are to help.

If you know there are plenty of foods you cannot eat we strongly recommend you bring extra snacks from home so you can top up your energy supply. Please feel free to speak to us if you have any further queries or questions.

Water

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps. Whilst trekking, water is supplied to fill up your individual bottles. This will be boiled, filtered or provided in large jerry cans or 5 litre bottles. Additionally you should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as your free Adventurous Ewe Water-To-Go bottle which you will receive on departure) to treat your water when in towns or where water is not supplied. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles.

Adventurous Ewe Water-to-Go bottle

Adventurous Ewe has partnered with Water-to-Go, a filtration system that eliminates over 99.99% of all microbiological contaminants from any non-salt water source – for more info please click here.

Adventurous Ewe trekkers will receive a free Water-to-Go bottle when departing for our Jordan Trek, and better still, 15% of the purchase value for replacement filters will be donated to our environmental charity partner, Cool Earth.

This means that not only will you have a fabewelous experience when you travel with Adventurous Ewe, you can do so whilst taking pride in knowing that you are helping support the work of this fantastic environmental charity.
