 Overview

This action-packed adventure will immerse you in the majestic scenery and quirky traditions of the Julian Alps, introduce you to via ferrata and alpine scrambling and see you summiting the highest peak in Slovenia, Mt Triglav at 2864m, and all in just 3 days.

Immerse yourself in the visually spectacular world of pristine mountains and snowcapped peaks to ascend the rocky centrepiece, Mt Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak. The climb to the summit is outstanding and excitingly airy along a breath-taking trail which offers some brilliant scrambling and sections of via ferrata. You will be rewarded with incredible panoramic views from the summit across the Julian Alps and as far as neighbouring Austria, Italy and Croatia.

Its name ‘tri-glav’ means three-headed’, due to its three-peak shape. This rocky mountain giant is steeped in tradition and is Slovenia’s national symbol. It appears on the country’s coat of arms and on the flag itself. Climbing Triglav is something of a Slovenian tradition and akin to a patriotic rite of passage. On reaching the summit it’s also very likely that you will witness the traditional for first time ascendees of receiving a thwack on the buttocks from a birch branch, or in its absence a climbing rope, which is just one of the many quirky features that makes this mountain adventure so unique and memorable.

This vast landscape of mountain peaks, thick forests, postcard-perfect lakes and blue-green rivers is the perfect setting for multitude of adventures right on your doorstep.

The start of your mountain adventure will see you trekking through picturesque alpine meadows and forests before rising above onto a high plateau with breath-taking views. Then it’s on to the shoulders of Triglav and the Triglavski hut at 2,515 metres. This is the highest mountain hut in Slovenia with the highest meteorological station in the country. Your Guide will decide whether or not you will attempt the summit climb of Triglav in the afternoon or early the following morning which is mainly down to conditions. If your summit attempt is scheduled for the following morning, that afternoon is a great chance to relax, meet some other trekkers from all over the world and enjoy some truly remarkable mountain views from this fantastic location.

Distance covered: approx. 15kms
Ascent: 1,650 metres

Day 3

Triglavski Dom to Triglav summit, return transfer to Ljubljana Airport

This morning, make sure you set your alarm early to witness the spectacular sunrise over the Julian Alps as the mountains glow orange when the sun’s early morning rays reach their rocky peaks.

If you are still to make your summit bid, you will set off in teams under the glow of the early morning sun. Leaving your day-packs at the hut you can travel light on your final 400 metre ascent along the East Ridge. The route is outstanding and excitingly airy as you follow an exhilarating trail of via ferrata to the summit climbing a series of cables and ladders. This means you will be wearing a harness which is attached to the fixed ropes known as Via Ferrata. The experienced Guide will be on hand to offer help and support. The scrambling is excellent alongside a breath-taking mountain setting and stunning views. You’ll be focused on the ridge and the climb over Mali Triglav (little Triglav) so the two hours to the summit will pass quickly and before you know it, you’ll be stood on the highest point in Slovenia. The 360 degree views from the top are simply jaw-dropping and include the vast display of the Julian Alps whilst the valleys of Kot, Krma, Vrata and Trenta spread out below. You will also see the neighbouring peaks in Austria and Italy. After taking in the views and the all-important summit photos you will return to the Triglavski Dom mountain hut for lunch.

In the afternoon, you descend through alpine forests into alpine meadows famous for their summer pastures. Cattle are herded to these mountain pastures at the end of June where they graze for at least two months. As you near the end of your trek it’s your last chance to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Julian Alps. Arriving back Krma Valley you will be transferred to Ljubljana Airport for your return flight to the UK full of an incredible sense of achievement and many stories to be shared.

Please note, if you wish to extend your stay in Slovenia, we can help you with plenty of recommendations of things to do and see and places to stay. Lake Bled is only a short taxi journey to the airport plus there’s many other areas of Slovenia which are worth exploring if your time permits. Both Jim and Sue have plenty of helpful tips available once you’ve booked on this exciting adventure.

Why go

Slovenia is the first country in the world to have been, in its entirety, declared a Green Destination of the World.

Slovenia is a country that tells its green story. Everything is green no matter which direction you turn – towards the Alpine peaks and extensive forests, the Adriatic Sea, the mysterious Karst and nearby vineyards, and the Pannonian Plain. Slovenians love their green country, so their concern is focused on preserving natural and cultural treasures. They like to share their love for their beautiful green surroundings with others who value sustainable management and development. Be a part of that green love!

As part of our sustainable travel commitment through our Travelife Partner Award, we’re passionate about actively supporting countries who are making great progress towards sustainable operations. Slovenia is one of these countries where we aim to create an adventure which is about discovery, immersing yourself in fascinating environments, customs and cultures and provides an understanding of the alpine region and people.

Carbon Footprint

We’ve crunched the numbers to work out the total carbon footprint of the Mt Triglav Trek, and plant or protect enough trees to suck 2x as much back out the atmosphere.

What’s the number?
It works out on average at 41kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, leaders, crew and office operations.

The only thing not included is travel to Slovenia. Given that our beloved guests travel from all parts of the UK for this adventure we have no way of reliably knowing their travel plans therefore we’re unable to include an individual number in the figure on display here.

What does the number mean?
To give you a snapshot of the numbers:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you).
  • A return economy class flight London – New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air over a period of 5 – 10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our adventures are relatively low-carbon by design, and we’re working to develop long term carbon reduction plan. Following much research into climate change organisations, we carefully selected to support the environmental charity, Cool Earth. They’re a sustainable operation and work with rainforest communities across the globe to halt deforestation and it’s impact on climate change. We invest 1% of our revenue into supporting critical conservation projects world-wild with Cool Earth.

On a local level in the UK, we’re an ongoing business member of the Snowdonia Society, plus Jim and Sue, together with some of our local leaders, also help the Society with their local projects such as planting native trees in Snowdonia. This is to help preserve the landscape and enhance wildlife habitat here in Snowdonia.

Want to know more?
We believe that with great travel, comes even greater responsibility. Tourism is one of the most important and largest industries on the planet. It employs more people worldwide than any other, with millions of families relying on tourism for their daily needs. At Adventurous Ewe we believe that our type of small scale, positive impact tourism can bring benefits to many communities, help preserve the environments we travel to see, and provide real and positive social exchanges. Here is our plan to do our part towards helping reduce factors that we can contributing to climate change as part of Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency.

Vaccinations and allergies

Vaccinations
There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements for Slovenia however we would recommend that your tetanus jabs are up to date.

For the most up to date details on vaccinations, please consult with your GP or travel healthcare practitioner 8 weeks in advance of travel and check the latest health advice for Slovenia from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website.

Severe allergies
If you have a severe allergy please inform us at the time of booking. We will do all we can to help, but unfortunately we are unable to guarantee an allergy free environment on this trip. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as ‘adrenaline auto-injectors’ are not carried as standard by AE leaders and crew. Whilst your leader is aware of our trekkers medical history, please also inform your leader on arrival of your allergy, and let them know where you keep your adrenaline pen.

Trip grading

Trekking experience and trip grading – ‘Tough’

This is a strenuous 2-day trek in the Julian Alps. It is graded ‘Tough’ due to the two full days of trekking, alpine scrambling and via ferrata sections. The trip is designed for confident trekkers who are looking for a short yet rewarding mountain ascent together with learning new mountain skills. Although this trek is not technically difficult, you should be an experienced walker and have a head for heights. Your route follows a well-established trail though there are some sections walking along ridgelines using via ferrata, the use of a safety harness, ropes, carabiner and a helmet (all of which will be supplied). No previous via ferrata experience is required as full instruction and support will be provided by your Guides.

As with any trek in mountainous areas, safety is paramount and your Guide will always make decisions to amend the itineraries to ensure the safety of the whole group.

Training

A bespoke training programme will be provided when join this trip to help you with your preparations.

You are also most welcome to visit our Training and Preparation page at
https://www.adventurousewe.co.uk/training-kit/

Our motto is:
Train hard, smile harder and enjoy the journey!

Kit

A full kit list will be provided when you register for this trip. Good kit can make the difference between a fantastic adventure and an uncomfortable one. Well worn in waterproof hiking boots are essential together with a good quality waterproof jacket AND trousers.

An exclusive Adventurous Ewe discount code will be provided for the independent outdoor retailers both online and in store when you book for this trek.

Via Ferrata equipment

Equipment required for the via ferrata section of this trek is included in your package. Rest assured any equipment that we supply will be hygienically cleaned and sanitised and was not used 72 hours before you use it and will not be used for the next 72 hours.

Weather

The climbing season for Mount Triglav is from July through October. Slovenia has a mixed alpine climate with summer temperatures in the range of 18 to 25°C. In the mountains cool mornings are normally followed by warm pleasant days, with temperatures in the Alps being ideal for walking. Summer weather on Triglav is quite cool; when it’s pushing 30°C on the Slovenian plains, it may be just 10°C on Triglav. It often drops below freezing at night, and snow may persist on the peaks throughout the year. Weather on the mountain is highly variable, bringing unexpected wind, rain and snow.

We recommend that you check the mountain weather forecast in the days leading up to your trek by clicking here

Accommodation

Hostel (1 night dorm share rooms) and mountain hut (1 night dorm share rooms)

We’ve sourced our accommodation very carefully in Bled and picked a locally owned hostel in line with the Adventurous Ewe style of travel. Your first night you in Lake Bled you will be staying in the Hostel Bledec. Accommodation is in dormitory style rooms with a shared bathroom. Private rooms are available on request, as in an upgraded stay in the 3-Star Hotel. Please enquire at the time of booking.

Whilst on the trek you will be staying in comfortable mountain huts in dormitory style rooms (4+) with bedding provided. The huts have basic toilet facilities and running water however shower facilities are not provided. These huts range in size but are all staffed and catered.

Single travellers

Our group trips are designed for shared accommodation in order to keep the cost at a minimum for you. Single rooms and tents may be organised for an additional cost however this is dependent on accommodation availability. Single travellers share with people of the same gender in accommodation ranging from twin to multi-share. For more info or to request a single room or upgrade in Bled, please get in touch with us at info@adventurousewe.co.uk.

Food & drinks

Whilst trekking breakfast and dinner will be organised and purchased in the mountain huts allowing you the flexibility to order what you wish.

Breakfast will typically be bread, jam, cheese, tea and coffee.

Dinner is usually two courses consisting of traditional Slovenian alpine food such as goulash, spaghetti or alpine stew followed by fruit, pudding, strudel or pancakes.

Lunch items, snacks and drinks can initially be purchased in Bled prior to your ascent and food and drinks can also be purchased in mountain huts. Again, this allows you the flexibility to eat what you wish and sample local foods.

It is not recommended to drink untreated water from the taps or streams enroute. You should take purification tablets or a filter bottle (such as a Water-To-Go bottle) to treat your water. We do not encourage the purchasing of single use plastic bottles. Bottled water can be purchased throughout the trek from the mountain huts, but we strongly discourage buying these as it contributes to plastic waste. For further info on purchasing an Adventurous Ewe Water-to-Go bottle please click here and help reduce the volume of single use plastic in this pristine alpine environment.

Please let us know when booking if you have any special dietary requirements or allergies.

Water-to-Go bottle

The impact of single use plastic is having on our landscape, wildlife and oceans, it is now more important than ever that we all make changes in order to help our planet. We may not be a huge global company but we’re passionate about playing our part and trying to make a huge difference collectively. Together we can dramatically reduce our consumption of single use plastics and support our responsible travel ethos of ‘Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but boot-prints, keep nothing but memories.’

You can make a difference too with taking part in the Mt Triglav Trek and purchasing one of these environmentally friendly reusable alternative bottles compared to single-use plastic water bottles. Grab a Water-to-Go bottle through Adventurous Ewe and receive a 15% discount. Even better, Water-to-Go will donate a further 15% to our charity partner, Cool Earth. Slovenia’s Sustainable Tourism

As part of our commitment to the Future of Tourism, we proudly support the development of more of our trips in countries who are actively making a difference to sustainable tourism. Slovenia is navigating a strong course of action with forming The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism (GSST), a national programme and certification scheme operating under the SLOVENIA GREEN brand that:

  • unites all efforts towards the sustainable development of tourism in Slovenia,
  • offers destinations and tourism providers concrete tools to assess and improve their sustainable operations,
  • promotes green action through the Slovenia Green brand

The scheme’s key strategic objective is to introduce sustainable models to Slovenian tourism, to both tourism service providers and destinations. All the objectives of the strategic guidelines are in line with sustainable development and demonstrate concern for the economic, social, cultural and natural environment.

“The Slovenian Tourist Board has pledged itself to sustainable development with the national strategic guideline and, in doing so, has taken an important step towards the better sustainable development of the entire country. Tourism service providers and destinations are switching to sustainable, i.e. green, development.”

In 2019 Slovenia ranked highly in the Sustainable Destinations Top 100. The Top 100 list celebrates efforts of tourism destinations for responsible and sustainable tourism. Nominators had to provide extensive information on their destination sustainability efforts.

Thoughtful and Responsible Travel

Further to this, Adventurous Ewe is committed to delivering our trips in a responsible and ethical manner with sustainability at its core. We respect and aim to operate our adventures to benefit local people, their economy and the environment!

Some of the ethical features embedded in our Mt Triglav Trek are:

  • Using local crew who are qualified Guides, support crew and drivers who are all extremely knowledgeable and experienced
  • Staying in smaller-scale locally owned accommodation
  • Buying locally produced food and drink, and dining in locally owned restaurants
  • Minimising plastic waste wherever possible
  • Careful management of limited energy and water resources
  • Offering real life experiences which promote cross-cultural understanding
  • Operating with a ‘leave no trace’ ethos – take only memories, leave only footprints
  • Adventurous Ewe will make a financial contribution to the environmental charity, Cool Earth, as part of our business partnership.

 As Sir David Attenborough said:

“Helping Cool Earth to halt tropical deforestation makes a real difference. Perhaps the biggest difference we will make in our whole lives.”

We will continue to invest a % of our revenue into supporting critical conservation projects around the world through Cool Earth and we invite you, our valuable flock, to do the same. Please give what you can and help save the world’s rainforests today by simply clicking here. Just £2.50 will save 10 trees and lock up 10 tonnes of CO2.

Together, we can all make a difference in helping preserve this precious and wonderful planet.
