Overview
Rising above the heart of the Julian Alps, Mount Triglav (2,864m) is much more than Slovenia’s highest mountain. It is a powerful national symbol and a summit that has inspired generations of Slovenians to head into the mountains. Now it’s your opportunity to experience this iconic peak for yourself.
Over three days, you’ll journey deep into Triglav National Park, where peaceful alpine meadows, rugged limestone peaks and traditional mountain huts create one of Europe’s most spectacular mountain landscapes. As you gain height, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with far reaching views, rocky ridgelines and the unmistakable summit of Triglav drawing ever closer.
The ascent is both rewarding and exciting. Higher on the mountain, you’ll be introduced to via ferrata and alpine scrambling, learning how to use fixed cables and simple climbing techniques as you tackle the airy upper ridge. Guided by experienced local IFMGA certified Mountain Guides, you’ll gain the skills and confidence needed to enjoy this spectacular alpine experience safely.
Standing on the summit is a moment to pause and take it all in. With panoramic views across the Julian Alps and into Austria, Italy and Croatia, you’ll quickly understand why Triglav holds such a special place in Slovenian culture.
Depending on your arrival time, you’ll also have the opportunity to explore the beautiful lakeside town of Bled before the adventure begins. Wander along the shoreline, take a refreshing swim from one of the designated bathing areas, enjoy a coffee overlooking the lake or treat yourself to a slice of the famous kremna rezina.
If you have a little longer to explore Slovenia, we highly recommend extending your stay. Discover the emerald waters of the Soča Valley, walk through the spectacular Vintgar Gorge, hike around the tranquil shores of Lake Bohinj, explore the remarkable underground world of Škocjan Caves or Postojna Cave, visit the charming capital of Ljubljana, or head to Maribor to see the world’s oldest producing grapevine at the Old Vine House.
Whether you’re looking for your first alpine adventure or your next mountain challenge, Mount Triglav promises an experience that will stay with you long after you leave the Julian Alps.

Into the Julian Alps and Triglavski Dom (2,515m)
Today your mountain adventure truly begins.
After breakfast, you’ll your local IFMGA certified Mountain Guide/s and travel for around an hour into the heart of Triglav National Park, following winding mountain roads through forests and alongside crystal clear rivers to the peaceful Krma Valley. On particularly warm days, an earlier departure may be planned to avoid trekking during the afternoon heat. If so, the hotel will provide a packed breakfast for the journey.
Your trekking journey starts with a steady ascent through fragrant pine forests and flower-filled alpine meadows before emerging above the tree line. As the landscape opens up, towering limestone peaks dominate the skyline and each step brings ever more impressive views across the Julian Alps.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Triglavski Dom (2,515m), Slovenia’s highest mountain hut. Perched high on the mountainside beneath Mount Triglav, it has welcomed climbers since 1896 and remains an important base for mountaineers crossing the Julian Alps. Settle in, enjoy a well-earned meal, chat with fellow walkers from around the world and take in the remarkable mountain scenery as the evening light settles over the surrounding peaks.
Depending on the weather, mountain conditions and the group’s progress, your guide will decide whether to attempt the summit later today or in the early hours of tomorrow morning, ensuring you have the safest and most enjoyable experience possible.
Distance: Approximately 15km
Ascent: Approximately 1,650m
Trekking time: Approximately 4-6 hours
Included

Accompanied by your local IFMGA certified Mountain Guide/s, you’ll follow the exhilarating East Ridge, using fixed cables and short ladder sections as you make your way along one of the most iconic alpine routes in Europe. With your via ferrata equipment securely attached throughout, you’ll soon discover why Triglav is regarded as the perfect introduction to this style of mountain adventure.
After passing over Mali Triglav (Little Triglav), the summit comes into view. Standing on the highest point in Slovenia (2,864m), you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360 degree views across the Julian Alps and, on a clear day, into Austria, Italy and Croatia. Extend Your Stay
Slovenia has so much more to offer beyond Mount Triglav. If you have a little extra time, we’d highly recommend extending your stay to discover the emerald waters of the Soča Valley, explore the spectacular Vintgar Gorge, hike around the tranquil shores of Lake Bohinj, wander the charming streets of Ljubljana, or visit the remarkable Škocjan Caves and Postojna Cave. Wine lovers can also head to Maribor to visit the Old Vine House, home to the world’s oldest producing grapevine.
Having explored Slovenia and summited Mount Triglav several times, we’re always happy to share our favourite places, practical tips and recommendations to help you make the most of your visit.
Slovenia is the first country in the world to have been, in its entirety, declared a Green Destination of the World.
Slovenia is a country that tells its green story. Everything is green no matter which direction you turn – towards the Alpine peaks and extensive forests, the Adriatic Sea, the mysterious Karst and nearby vineyards, and the Pannonian Plain. Slovenians love their green country, so their concern is focused on preserving natural and cultural treasures. They like to share their love for their beautiful green surroundings with others who value sustainable management and development. Be a part of that green love!
As part of our sustainable travel commitment through our Travelife Partner Award, we’re passionate about actively supporting countries who are making great progress towards sustainable operations. Slovenia is one of these countries where we aim to create an adventure which is about discovery, immersing yourself in fascinating environments, customs and cultures and provides an understanding of the alpine region and people.
We’ve crunched the numbers to work out the total carbon footprint of the Mt Triglav Trek, and plant or protect enough trees to suck 2x as much back out the atmosphere.
What’s the number?
It works out on average at 41kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, leaders, crew and office operations.
The only thing not included is travel to Slovenia. Given that our beloved guests travel from all parts of the UK for this adventure we have no way of reliably knowing their travel plans therefore we’re unable to include an individual number in the figure on display here.
What does the number mean?
To give you a snapshot of the numbers:
- Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you).
- A return economy class flight London – New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air over a period of 5 – 10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our adventures are relatively low-carbon by design, and we’re working to develop long term carbon reduction plan. Following much research into climate change organisations, we carefully selected to support the environmental charity, Cool Earth. They’re a sustainable operation and work with rainforest communities across the globe to halt deforestation and it’s impact on climate change. We invest 1% of our revenue into supporting critical conservation projects world-wild with Cool Earth.
On a local level in the UK, we’re an ongoing business member of the Snowdonia Society, plus Jim and Sue, together with some of our local leaders, also help the Society with their local projects such as planting native trees in Snowdonia. This is to help preserve the landscape and enhance wildlife habitat here in Snowdonia.

Vaccinations
There are currently no mandatory vaccination requirements for Slovenia however we would recommend that your tetanus jabs are up to date.
For the most up to date details on vaccinations, please consult with your GP or travel healthcare practitioner 8 weeks in advance of travel and check the latest health advice for Slovenia from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) on the TravelHealthPro website.
Severe allergies
If you have a severe allergy please inform us at the time of booking. We will do all we can to help, but unfortunately we are unable to guarantee an allergy free environment on this trip. You will need to carry your own treatment for the allergy with you, as ‘adrenaline auto-injectors’ are not carried as standard by AE leaders and crew. Our Guides have been carefully selected to ensure you have the best experience with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure.

The trip is designed for confident trekkers who are looking for a short yet rewarding mountain ascent together with learning new mountain skills. Although this trek is not technically difficult, you should be an experienced walker and have a head for heights. No previous via ferrata experience is required as full instruction and support will be provided by your Guides.

Via Ferrata equipment
Equipment required for the via ferrata section of this trek is included in your package.
The climbing season for Mount Triglav is from July through October. Slovenia has a mixed alpine climate with summer temperatures in the range of 18 to 25°C. In the mountains cool mornings are normally followed by warm pleasant days, with temperatures in the Alps being ideal for walking. Summer weather on Triglav is quite cool; when it’s pushing 30°C on the Slovenian plains, it may be just 10°C on Triglav. It often drops below freezing at night, and snow may persist on the peaks throughout the year. Weather on the mountain is highly variable, bringing unexpected wind, rain and snow.
We recommend that you check the mountain weather forecast in the days leading up to your trek by clicking here.
Your adventure includes two nights’ accommodation, carefully chosen to complement your journey from the shores of Lake Bled to the high mountains of the Julian Alps.
Lake Bled Hotel (1 night)
Your first night is spent in an award-winning hotel in Lake Bled on a twin share basis, or similar, depending on availability. Our preferred hotel has been recognised with the prestigious Slovenia Green Accommodation certificate for its commitment to sustainable tourism, including the use of renewable energy generated by solar collectors.
Located just a five-minute walk from the shores of Lake Bled, it’s the ideal base to relax after your journey or explore the town before your mountain adventure begins. Stroll along the lakeside promenade, enjoy a swim in the crystal clear waters, visit Bled Castle or sample the famous kremna rezina cream cake.
Triglavski Dom na Kredarici Mountain Hut (1 night)
Your second night is spent at Triglavski Dom na Kredarici (2,515m), the highest mountain hut in Slovenia. Perched on the ridge between Rjavina and Mount Triglav, the hut has welcomed climbers since 1896 and also serves as a year-round weather station. It provides an authentic alpine experience and is the perfect base for your summit attempt.
Accommodation is on a shared dormitory basis with simple but comfortable facilities, including:
- Shared bunk rooms
- Dry toilets
- Wash basins with cold water and soap
- No showers
- A welcoming dining room with a wood burning stove
- Electricity for charging devices (shared charging points)
- Generally good mobile phone signal
Water at the hut is collected from rainfall, so supplies are limited. We kindly ask all guests to use water thoughtfully. Electricity is generated using solar panels, a wind turbine and a backup generator, helping minimise the hut’s environmental impact while operating in this remarkable high mountain setting.
Please note that mountain huts are an essential part of the alpine experience. Facilities are intentionally basic, but the spectacular location, warm hospitality and unique atmosphere more than make up for the lack of modern comforts.
Food & Drink
Food is an important part of the Triglav experience, whether you’re enjoying dinner in a traditional mountain hut or discovering local restaurants in Lake Bled.
Lunch & Snacks for the Trek
Before your trek begins, you’ll need to organise your lunch and snacks for your time in the mountains.
On arrival in Bled, you can purchase sandwiches, snacks and trail food from a local supermarket, conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the hotel. This gives you the flexibility to choose exactly what you’d like to eat on the trail.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to travel with less food, you can purchase lunch at Triglavski Dom after arriving at the mountain hut.
Your First Evening in Bled
Dinner is not included on your arrival day, giving you the opportunity to explore the many restaurants and cafés within easy walking distance of the hotel. Whether you’d like to try traditional Slovenian cuisine or something more familiar, there’s plenty of choice. Once booked, we’ll share some of our favourite local recommendations to help you make the most of your first evening.
The following morning, you’ll enjoy breakfast at the hotel before travelling to the Krma Valley to begin your trek. On particularly warm days, an earlier departure may be planned to avoid trekking during the afternoon heat. If this happens, the hotel will prepare a packed breakfast for you to enjoy on the journey.
Mountain Hut – Half Board
Your stay at Triglavski Dom na Kredarici is on a half board basis, with dinner and breakfast included.
Dinner
After your first day on the trail, you’ll enjoy a hearty two-course evening meal at the mountain hut. Typical dishes include traditional Slovenian favourites such as goulash, spaghetti or alpine stew, followed by dessert, which may include fruit, strudel or pancakes. It’s the perfect way to refuel before your summit attempt.
Breakfast
Breakfast arrangements depend on when your guide schedules the summit climb.
If you’re setting out for the summit in the early hours of the morning, you’ll return to the hut afterwards for a well-earned breakfast at around 08:00. If you’ve already reached the summit the previous afternoon or evening, you’ll enjoy an early breakfast before beginning your descent into the valley.
Breakfast is simple and nourishing and typically includes:
- One cup of tea or coffee
- Bread
- Jam
- Honey
- Scrambled eggs
Food & Drinks at the Mountain Hut
Despite its remote location, Triglavski Dom serves a surprisingly good selection of food and drinks, including:
- Hot meals
- Soups
- Tea and coffee
- Beer
- Soft drinks
- Isotonic drinks
- Bottled water
Typical prices at the time of writing include:
- 1.5 litre bottled water – approximately €7
- Sola isotonic drink – approximately €6
- Alcohol-free Radler Limona – approximately €8
Prices are provided as a guide and may be subject to change.
Dietary Requirements
Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free meals, including gluten free bread, are available. Please let us know at the time of booking if you have any dietary requirements, food allergies or intolerances so arrangements can be made in advance.
Drinking Water
Water at the mountain hut is collected from rainfall and supplies are limited. Tap water and natural streams along the route should not be treated as safe drinking water without purification.
We recommend carrying a refillable water bottle or hydration bladder together with purification tablets or a filter bottle, such as a Water-to-Go bottle. This allows you to refill safely while helping reduce single use plastic waste. If you wish to purchase an Adventurous Ewe Water-to-Go bottle, please let us know.
Bottled water is available to purchase at the mountain hut when required, and the hut operates a recycling system for empty bottles.
The impact of single use plastic is having on our landscape, wildlife and oceans, it is now more important than ever that we all make changes in order to help our planet. We may not be a huge global company but we’re passionate about playing our part and trying to make a huge difference collectively. Together we can dramatically reduce our consumption of single use plastics and support our responsible travel ethos of ‘Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but boot-prints, keep nothing but memories.’
You can make a difference too with taking part in the Mt Triglav Trek and purchasing one of these environmentally friendly reusable alternative bottles compared to single-use plastic water bottles. Grab a Water-to-Go bottle through Adventurous Ewe and receive a 15% discount. Even better, Water-to-Go will donate a further 15% to our charity partner, Cool Earth. Slovenia’s Sustainable Tourism
As part of our commitment to the Future of Tourism, we proudly support the development of more of our trips in countries who are actively making a difference to sustainable tourism. Slovenia is navigating a strong course of action with forming The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism (GSST), a national programme and certification scheme operating under the SLOVENIA GREEN brand that:
- unites all efforts towards the sustainable development of tourism in Slovenia,
- offers destinations and tourism providers concrete tools to assess and improve their sustainable operations,
- promotes green action through the Slovenia Green brand
The scheme’s key strategic objective is to introduce sustainable models to Slovenian tourism, to both tourism service providers and destinations. All the objectives of the strategic guidelines are in line with sustainable development and demonstrate concern for the economic, social, cultural and natural environment.
“The Slovenian Tourist Board has pledged itself to sustainable development with the national strategic guideline and, in doing so, has taken an important step towards the better sustainable development of the entire country. Tourism service providers and destinations are switching to sustainable, i.e. green, development.”
In 2019 Slovenia ranked highly in the Sustainable Destinations Top 100. The Top 100 list celebrates efforts of tourism destinations for responsible and sustainable tourism. Nominators had to provide extensive information on their destination sustainability efforts.
Thoughtful and Responsible Travel
Further to this, Adventurous Ewe is committed to delivering our trips in a responsible and ethical manner with sustainability at its core. We respect and aim to operate our adventures to benefit local people, their economy and the environment!
Some of the ethical features embedded in our Mt Triglav Trek are:
- Using local crew who are qualified Guides, support crew and drivers who are all extremely knowledgeable and experienced
- Staying in smaller-scale locally owned accommodation
- Buying locally produced food and drink, and dining in locally owned restaurants
- Minimising plastic waste wherever possible
- Careful management of limited energy and water resources
- Offering real life experiences which promote cross-cultural understanding
- Operating with a ‘leave no trace’ ethos – take only memories, leave only footprints
- Adventurous Ewe will make a financial contribution to the environmental charity, Cool Earth, as part of our business partnership.
As Sir David Attenborough said:
“Helping Cool Earth to halt tropical deforestation makes a real difference. Perhaps the biggest difference we will make in our whole lives.”
We will continue to invest a % of our revenue into supporting critical conservation projects around the world through Cool Earth and we invite you, our valuable flock, to do the same. Please give what you can and help save the world’s rainforests today by simply clicking here. Just £2.50 will save 10 trees and lock up 10 tonnes of CO2.
Together, we can all make a difference in helping preserve this precious and wonderful planet.

Adventurous Ewe care about everyone in the group and their individual needs. They have made every trek I’ve been on the best experience I could wish for. I always come home from each trek excited about booking the next one! Highly recommend.
